US Open multi tips & tennis betting specials for Day 5
BIG names keep on tumbling in the early rounds of the 2017 US Open.
The men’s draw, which was already missing five of the world’s top 11 players, has now lost 12 of the 32 seeds who started the tournament.
Alexander Zverev entered the week as one of the favourites, but he was dumped out by Croatia’s Borna Coric in only the second round.
Also falling at that hurdle was eighth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who succumbed to Canadian phenom Denis Shapovalov for the second time in the space of a month.
Nick Kyrgios didn’t even make it that far, losing to fellow Australian player John Millman in the opening round.
Things are just as chaotic in the women’s event, where no fewer than 10 seeded players were eliminated at the first time of asking.
That star-studded list includes defending champion Angelique Kerber, British favourite Johanna Konta and second seed Simona Halep.
Caroline Wonziacki only lasted a fraction longer, exiting at the hands of Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova.
Aussie hope Daria Gavrilova will hope to buck the trend when she faces local girl Shelby Rogers on Friday morning.
Already through to the third round is Ash Barty – one of the more impressive performers in the opening week at Flushing Meadows.
All those giant slayings have opened up both draws considerably as we look ahead to the last 32.
(Matches from 12am AEST Saturday, September 2)
L Pouille to defeat M Kukushkin – $1.46
A Barty to defeat S Stephens – $2.10
D Vekic to defeat A Sevastova – $2.15
M Zverev to defeat J Isner – $3.31
Mikhail Kukushkin vs. Lucas Pouille (16)
Kukushkin – $2.61
Pouille – $1.46
The 16th seed in the men’s draw is the only thing resembling an anchor in this ambitious four-leg tennis multi. The young Frenchman did not have it all his own way in the second round, requiring five sets to see off Jared Donaldson. He will need to be on his guard against Kukushkin, who knocked out David Ferrer, but we think Pouille has enough class to dispatch his Kazakhstani opponent.
Ash Barty vs. Sloane Stephens
Barty – $2.10
Stephens – $1.68
Former cricketer Barty oozes raw ball-striking talent, which was on full display in her wins over Ana Konjuh (4-6, 6-1, 6-1) and Aliaksandra Sasnovich (6-1, 7-6). Stephens is also in decent nick, having dumped out 11th seed Dominika Cibulkova in her last hit. Nevertheless, this is an excellent opportunity for Ash to reach the fourth round of a major for the very first time.
Anastasija Sevastova (16) vs. Donna Vekic
Sevastova – $1.65
Vekic – $2.15
We picked Vekic to outplay Peng Shuai in the second round – and boy, did she deliver. The young Croat has dropped only five games thus far and looks capable of beating just about anybody when her serve is on song. She lost to Sevastova in a tight contest at Kaohsiung last year, but we like Donna to flip the script in the rematch and deliver us another valuable win.
John Isner (10) vs. Mischa Zverev (23)
Isner – $1.30
Zverev – $3.31
Isner has never looked a serious threat at the grand slams, yet he is the USA’s top male seed at Flushing Meadows. Now he faces a guy who has made a habit of grinding down higher-ranked opponents. Although Zverev the elder has already played 10 sets at US Open 2017, he has beaten Isner twice before and adds huge value to a multi bet that is much more achievable than the big odds suggest.
