UFC 272 Recap: Grudge settled as Covington salutes

Colby Covington wins UFC 272 main event

The long-simmering feud between Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington reached a crescendo over the weekend in what was a memorable the main event at UFC 272. As predicted, Covington delivered an overwhelming points victory, his wrestling and grappling proving far too much for the striking of Masvidal. Medium-sized bets were placed on Covington via decision and Masvidal via KO, as these appeared the most likely routes to victory. Covington is without doubt the second best fighter in the UFC Welterweight division, just a notch below dominant champ Kamaru Usman.

A medium-sized bet was also placed against Greg Hardy, a former NFL player pretending to be a heavyweight fighter, and this also saluted for a decent winning afternoon. Hardy thought he could switch sports and take the MMA world by storm, but there are levels to the fight game, and his latest loss should see him cut from the UFC roster.

At a time when World War 3 looms on the horizon, watching some of the best fighters in the world locked inside a small cage for 15 or 25 minutes of unrestrained combat is somehow therapeutic. Violence is woven into the human DNA and all ancient cultures were built on tales of fearsome warriors. Nowadays, hand-to-hand combat should be reserved strictly for moments of self-defence and for sport.

Pakistan and Australia set for stalemate in Rawalpindi

The largest weekend wager was directed toward the cricket Test in Pakistan. The game is being played on a pitch that resembles a road, with locals confident the strip would not crack or break up across five days of play. Pakistan lost four wickets for 476 runs across two full days before declaring their innings, such was the pitch’s benign nature. Australia’s batters know how to make runs on flat decks, so a draw always looked close to a betting certainty.

Very large wagers were placed on the draw during the first two days of play at the average odds of $2.60. The Aussie top order survived a few minor scares before building a solid innings, and when the odds of the draw dipped to $1.25 with online bookmakers, we bailed out for a handsome payday. Another return will be delivered should the draw eventuate, but we’re freerolling from here.

Free hit for Fury with belts on the line

Fight fans will not need to wait long for the next blockbuster event, which will see towering, heroic warrior Tyson Fury take on the washed out, cowardly Dillian Whyte for some of the world boxing heavyweight title belts on April 24. This should be an easy KO for Fury, so if you’re unafraid of short odds and have some spare money lying around, don’t be afraid to load up on ‘The Gypsy King’.
