Two-state options for Begood Toya Mother

Begood Toya Mother (r) has been entered in races in Adelaide and Melbourne including the G1 Memsie.

Trainer Daniel Bowman is considering options in Melbourne and Adelaide for Begood Toya Mother ahead of his planned Group One target at Caulfield.

Bowman has entered Begood Toya Mother in three 1400m-races on Saturday – two at Caulfield and one at Morphettville.

Begood Toya Mother is among 17 nominations for the Group One Memsie Stakes as well as a handicap at Caulfield while at Morphettville he is entered in the Listed Penny Edition Stakes.

Bowman is targeting next month’s Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield after Begood Toya Mother recorded his sixth win on end in the Regal Roller Stakes at Caulfield on August 17.

“I had to put a nom in for the Memsie,” Bowman said.

“Early on it was sounding like it may not be a big field and might not be overly strong, so we had to give ourselves the option.

“It really comes down to what is going to be the best option for him to have him cherry ripe for the Sir Rupert Clarke.

“He’s definitely ready to run this weekend then have the three weeks to the Sir Rupert Clarke.”

With a handicap rating of 94, Begood Toya Mother should make the Sir Rupert Clarke field, although Bowman said he would like an extra couple of points to make sure of his place.

Victory in a Group One race would mean a decent ratings hike while a Listed win would not be as damaging.

“Getting more rating points on Saturday will help but we still want to beat the handicapper, obviously,” Bowman said.

“It’s a fine line.”

Bowman will monitor progressive acceptances for the Memsie and if the field falls away he may give consideration to running for the $600,000 first prize.

“Come Wednesday morning, what was looking a pretty solid field, it might thin out,” Bowman said.

“But this time next year will be his go. He’ll have had 20 starts, be a bit stronger, a bit tougher.

“While he’s still learning I think we’ll keep going through our grades and target the Sir Rupert Clarke which is the right Group One at this stage.”
