Twitter lights up with more Richmond pain in Round 9 AFL chat
WHAT a weekend of footy we just witnessed.
Essendon and Collingwood recorded wins of the most unlikely, while Richmond lost in a fashion that has become synonymous to footy fans.
There is a lot of social media fodder on Twitter when the Bombers and the Pies win, but when the Tigers blow a huge lead for the second week running, that is when the AFL public really comes into its own.
It was the best and worst from AFL fans this weekend, and we took a look at what the supporters had to say following an interesting round of football.
Collingwood comeback stuns hapless Hawthorn
Who saw this coming?
Collingwood went into Saturday night’s fixture against Hawthorn apparently only needing 60 percent effort to beat Hawthorn.
What a ridiculous statement. Watch much footy? https://t.co/sNs8w82zYb

But after scoring just one behind for the opening quarter while Hawthorn scored six goals themselves, it looked like Collingwood were playing at less than optimal effort.
The naysayers came out in force.

Momentum swung violently, however, and the Pies rallied back hard to take the lead in the fourth quarter and never handed it back to run out 18-point winners.
@prlloyd63 @abcgrandstand @abcnews @glennlondey I’d given up. Amazing comeback by @CollingwoodFC. Pendlebury superb. #AFLPiesHawks #gopies #sisdebyside

Quite rightly, the Collingwood fans gloated long and hard on Twitter.

Not a bad way to win your first match against the Hawks under Nathan Buckley.
Tigers tear defeat away from the jaws of victory … again
Who didn’t see this happening?
Richmond: No one can choke harder than we did last week.
Richmond: Hold my beer.#AFLGiantsTigers— Jess Wheeler (@wheelswordsmith) May 20, 2017
Richmond broke their fans’ hearts for the second week in a row after holding a commanding lead throughout the game only to concede the latest of late goals to suffer another last-minute defeat.
I’d say that’s unbelievable but it’s actually the most believable thing ever #AFLGiantsTigers

There are few things opposition fans love more than a Richmond capitulation, and the tweets came thick and fast on the back of this defeat.

One social media user even came up with a different way for radio station 3AW to cover the AFL on Saturday night.
The team at @3AWisfootball should abandon the call of #AFLPiesHawks and just take 3 hours of talkback from Richmond fans. #AFLGiantsTigers
— Anthony Leach (@ahleach) May 20, 2017
Even the Tiger fans could not help but laugh at their own ineptitude in the latter stages of matches.
One Tiger Twitter user poked fun at a long-running gag that over-emotional Richmond fans that “cook” their membership cards in the microwave after a string of bad form.

Bombers bash Eagles to record second-straight upset win
Back to results that were unexpected, no one – including the most optimistic Essendon fans – would have predicted the fashion in which the Dons dismantled the Eagles on Sunday afternoon.
Or maybe they should have seen it coming given how bad West Coast have been in Melbourne this year.
As shocking as the hammering was, what was completely unsurprising was the Bombers’ fans reaction to Sam Mitchell.
The superstar Hawk-turned-Eagle has always had a knack of getting under opposition players’ skin, but his drug taunt against the Bombers riled up the fans like few others.

The Bomber Twitter contingent have long memories, and they gave the four-time premiership Hawk both barrels on social media.
Even the youngsters got in on the action.
My nephew has started booing Mitchell, he has no idea why. #AFLDonsEagles #sheep

The Dons players let their superior play do the talking throughout in the match, but Josh Green’s rundown tackle of Mitchell may have got the loudest cheer of the match.

We think it is probably better to focus on the success rather than revel in the misery of others, but whatever floats your boat Bomber fans.
