A wounded giant heads south to the capital as Manchester United take on Tottenham Hotspur in an intriguing clash to round out Saturday’s overnight action in Matchweek 10 of the 2021/22 English Premier League season.
The Red Devils are reeling from what can only be described as their most harrowing weekend in the EPL era. A 5-0 loss to Liverpool at Old Trafford is horrifying enough for United fans, but it would have been so much worse had the Merseysiders not put the cue in the rack after 50 minutes.
It wasn’t just the scoreline that had punters and pundits alike calling for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s head; it was the pathetic nature of the capitulation. The worrying form-lines of Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw were cruelly exposed against a top-notch Liverpool attack, while Paul Pogba’s insipid cameo from the bench – which included a critical error that led to Mohamed Salah’s sealer and ended with a sending off – summed up where United are at right now.
To some observers, it seems remarkable that Solskjaer is still at the helm for the trip to London this weekend. His lack of tactical scope has become an obvious handicap for this United side, while it is clear that he is not getting anything from the players. Perhaps the club’s powerbrokers are simply taking their time to line up a suitable successor, but there is a feeling that they may be stubbornly sticking by their man for the time being.

Things are not a hell of a lot better on the other side of the fence. Tottenham’s 1-0 loss to West Ham United last weekend marked their fourth defeat in London derbies already this season, having also gone down to Crystal Palace (3-0), Arsenal (3-1) and Chelsea (3-0). Spurs sit sixth on the EPL table, one point above Man United, but they are five points adrift of third-placed Manchester City and need to turn things around sharpish to stay in touch with the title fancies.
The alarming thing for Tottenham fans is the lack of goals. Even with the likes of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min at their disposal, Spurs have managed only nine goals in as many league games this season. That is a stunning statistic for a team that finished equal-third for goals scored in the EPL last term, tied with Liverpool and Leicester City on 68.
As such, Nuno Espirito Santo is no more secure in his position than his opposite number is. If there is a decisive result either way, it could be that the axe falls on the neck of the losing manager.
Tottenham vs Man United EPL betting predictions
Total goals: Over 2.5
How can this game not have goals in it? Spurs might be struggling to find the back of the net this season, but they are conceding goals on a regular basis. And while some managers would go hunting a clean sheet after a 5-0 drubbing, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer doesn’t seem to have it in him. Both teams have the tools to hurt the other, so we are taking the overs.
Over 2.5 total goals
Match result: Tottenham Hotspur
Given United’s putrid form, it is absolutely astonishing that Spurs are outsiders with most EPL betting sites. While Tottenham have won one and lost one since the last international break, the Red Devils have shipped nine goals in two outings. Spurs might not be operating at the levels we have become accustomed to in recent years, but they have to win this at home.
Tottenham Hotspur to win
