With both teams coming off upset losses, Sydney and St Kilda will be desperate to get their seasons back on track when they clash at the SCG this Saturday in round 15 of the 2022 AFL season.
Round 14 was a strange series of games that delivered some surprising results. The Bombers found their scoring boots and humbled the Saints, and Sydney left Adelaide with a paltry score and an unexpected loss. That’s how sports betting works, though; favourites get beaten, and sometimes upsets can be infectious.
Sydney will be keen to leverage their home ground advantage and defend their ladder position here. The top eight is going to become increasingly crowded as the Magpies, Bulldogs, and Suns all press for finals action, and the Swans cannot afford to leave premiership points on the table.
The Saints face the same pressure to cling to eighth position and must produce a solid attacking effort to trouble the Swans. Our numbers have St Kilda ranking 14th in the comp for inside 50s, a miserable stat that will prove their undoing if it cannot be quickly rectified.
Also troubling are their clearance numbers, where they rank 13th in the comp, and hit-outs, where they sit 11th. These mediocre stats mean they must be extremely clean and efficient with their ball use and goal kicking, and on an off day the Saints are liable to be exposed, as happened on that dreadful night at Cairns a few weeks back. Notably, the Saints welcome back Jack Steele, who is a significant inclusion.
Key matchup: Lance Franklin vs Max King
Sydney Swans star Lance Franklin shows no real signs of slowing as he enters the veteran years. Now 35, Franklin is still the prototype for a tall athletic forward who can get around the ground, take a big grab, and slot a goal from 55 metres. Franklin is averaging 2.6 goals and 5.6 marks per game this year, and his influence will need to be negated if the Saints are to emerge with the spoils.
Saints forward Max King is 14 years younger than Franklin but, despite his team’s documented struggles generating inside 50s, is booting a superior 2.7 goals per game in 2022. King only converts at 50%, which is less than ideal, but time is on his side and he should be able to improve this stat with more experience. If the Saints are to spring the upset, they will need to feed plenty of markable ball in King’s direction.
Sydney vs St Kilda Rd 15 betting strategy
The Swans are warm favourites in what shapes to be a low-scoring affair. The line has been set around 14.5 points, and we can look forward to a tactical struggle that might be won and lost based on conversion of scoring opportunities. Following our statistical analysis, we must go with the Swans here. Until we see the Saints show more attacking flair, we will remain bearish on their September aspirations. Sydney at the line is the official tip.
Sydney Swans -14.5
