Sydney Swans v GWS Giants match preview
Kicking off a super Saturday in round eight of the AFL, it’s the ‘Battle of the Bridge’ as the Sydney Swans and GWS Giants face off in a top-four clash at the SCG.
Last Sunday, the Swans continued their excellent start to the season with a 76-point win over Hawthorn. Winning every quarter, it was a dominant display from John Longmire’s men, who will be pleased with keeping the Hawks to just five goals in the match.
With consecutive wins by 10 or more goals, the Sydney Swans are now second on the ladder with the best percentage in the AFL. Despite an inconsistent forward line, their goalscoring midfielders have been a regular threat.
In more positive news, the Swans are set to regain former captain Luke Parker for his first match of the season after he collected 34 disposals in a rare VFL return. Braeden Campbell appears the likely omission after being the sub in the past two weeks.
The GWS Giants were also in fine form in round seven as they comfortably dealt with the Brisbane Lions by 54 points last Thursday in Canberra. Coming off a defeat to the Blues the week before, Adam Kingsley’s charges returned to their best as their star-studded midfield got on top.
Sitting just behind the Swans on the ladder, the only concern around the Giants right now is that they haven’t beaten any sides in the top eight.
They are also expected to have some major inclusions as captain Toby Greene returns from suspension, while key defender Sam Taylor and veteran midfielder Stephen Coniglio are both set to return from injury.
Sydney v GWS AFL R8 predictions
Despite these being the top two attacking sides in the AFL, torrential conditions forecast for Sydney suggests this match might be a bit scrappy. The Swans come in as slight home favourites with AFL betting sites, but the Giants have won four of the past five meetings at the SCG. In the wet it could easily go either way, but given the Swans are unbeaten at home in 2024, back them in at $1.82 with Bet365.
Sydney midfielder Isaac Heeney has had a stellar start to the season, averaging 27 disposals and 1.7 goals per game. He has thrived with more time in the midfield, collecting more of the ball while also kicking at least one goal in every match. With Parker returning to side, Heeney will probably spend more time forward, so back him to kick two or more goals at $3.10 with top online bookmakers.
The bigger-bodied midfielders often standout in wet conditions, so watch out for Giants gun Tom Green. Top 10 in the AFL for both disposals and contested possessions, he is coming off a 37-disposal performance against the Lions. Last year when these sides faced off in similar conditions, the 23-year-old collected 38 disposals, so back him to put in a similar performance with 35 or more disposals at $2.90.
