Swans dominate 2016 AFL Norm Smith Medal betting
THE 2016 Norm Smith medal betting frame is looking more and more like a solely-Sydney affair.
Outside of Geelong’s Patrick Dangerfield ($8), Sportsbet.com.au has three Swans as the next best in the market in 2016, while a further two Bloods find themselves within the top-nine players in the frame.
Luke Parker is the best placed Swan at $11, while Josh Kennedy and Daniel Hannebery are both locked in at the $12 quote.
Coleman medallist Lance Franklin is the next best Sydney player after the midfield trio at $16, while stoutly built on-baller Tom Mitchell rounds out the quintet of Swans at $26.
Former Sydney Swans premiership star Leo Barry said the Swans ($3 for the premiership at Sportsbet) are justified favourites heading into the finals series, and their star-studded midfield – who occupy three of the top-four lines on Norm Smith betting – will play a huge role coming into the business end of the season.
“What really stands out, they are consistent across the board, like I think we were through that 2005 and 2006 season,” Barry said.
“The Swannies have got an absolute A-grade midfield. We had a good midfield, but we probably didn’t have the likes of the real ball winners like [Daniel] Hannebery, [Luke] Parker and [Josh] Kennedy, not to downplay the guys we did have in the midfield.
“They’re a great team and they’ve proven that this year, getting five guys in the All Australian side.”

Huge betting plunge puts Mills into odds on to win rising star
PUNTERS who want to place a bet on this year’s AFL Rising Star award will only be able to do so at a select number of agencies after a flood of money came for Sydney young-gun Callum Mills.
Sportsbet.com.au is one of the only bookmakers taking bets on the Rising Star market, but the online juggernaut was forced to move Mills from $2.10 just a week ago to the $1.18 quote currently on offer after a splurge of money came for the Swan.
The next best in the market is Western Bulldog Caleb Daniel, who is at the $4 quote – the only other man in single figures.
Young Bomber Darcy Parish ($13) and explosive Demon Christian Petracca ($15) are the only other players under the $26 mark.
AFL draft expert Kevin Sheehan said the season Mills has put together is unprecedented.
“So composed,” Sheehan said of Mills.
“He’s shown leadership down back and marshalled the troops like a guy with 150 games under belt. A revelation for the top side in the competition.”
Sydney coach John Longmire said Mills’ impact on his side belies his age.
“He’s had a great year, he been fantastic at half-back for the whole year, which he’s never done in his whole career.” Longmire said.
“He’s strong at the ball, he’s really courageous – sometimes a bit too courageous for his own good, he’s that hard at the ball.
“But he’s also a very smart decision-maker and he’s got a very mature approach to footy.
“He’s been a fantastic addition for us this year.”
