The annual New Year’s Eve clash between the Adelaide Strikers and Sydney Thunder is the next stop as the Big Bash League train rolls on.

The Adelaide Strikers will be out to snap a four-game losing streak and pick up just their second win of BBL11. They are coming off one of their stronger performances of the season with the bat, having amassed 5/175 against the in-form Hurricanes. With fifties from Jake Weatherald (51) and Matt Renshaw (63) the Strikers top order has what it takes to set a total which could prove tricky for the Thunder on Friday night if they bat first.

It took a Ben McDermott masterclass to chase down the total for the Hurricanes, with the Strikers bowling attack doing well enough to restrict the remainder of the Canes’ batting lineup. With proven international bowlers like Peter Siddle, Wes Agar, Fawad Ahmed and Rashid Khan, they will be confident of restricting an inconsistent Thunder batting line-up and make it a second win in three games against the Thunder.

Fresh off handing the Perth Scorchers their first defeat of the season, the Sydney Thunder will be confident of stringing together consecutive wins for the first time this season. Fifties from Sam Billings (67) and Jason Sangha (56*) laid the foundations for the Thunder on the way to them setting a total of 7/200.

The Thunder bowlers made sure they were never in danger of losing the match when striking at regular intervals. Nathan McAndrew (3/40), Chris Green (2/29) and Saqib Mahmood (2/29) were instrumental throughout the bowling innings. If they bring the same sort of intent to Adelaide, they may just rip through a fragile Strikers batting line-up. With the twin spin duo of Green and Tanveer Sangha, the Strikers batsman may struggle to get it off the square throughout the night.

T20 Betting sites have the Strikers as outsiders in their marquee clash of the season with odds of $2.25 available, whilst the Thunder are $1.65 favourites to end the year on a positive note.

Adelaide Strikers v Sydney Thunder betting tips

Sydney Thunder to win

The Thunder were the team to end the Scorchers undefeated streak and if they bring the same intent with the bat they showed on Monday night, then they should be too powerful for this Strikers side. With Adelaide losing their last four matches in the BBL, the Strikers confidence are at an all-time low. If the Thunder can set a score upwards of 180, it is hard to see how the Strikers can chase it down. Or alternatively, with the likes of Alex Hales, Sam Billings, Jason Sangha and Daniel Sams, not total will be out of reach for this Thunder side.

Top Sydney Thunder run scorer: Alex Hales

It has been a BBL season to forget so far for Englishman Alex Hales. With a score of 35 from his six innings, he will be hopeful of lighting up the stage on New Year’s Eve in a way only he knows how. He averages a tick over 31 in the Big Bash and with ten 50’s to his name from 53 matches, it is safe to say he is due for a big knock. He loves playing off his pads and with short boundaries square at Adelaide Oval, then Hales looks a great bet as the top run scorer for the Thunder.
