Steve Tregea trio to tackle Doomben
The Steve Tregea-trained Bergerac will wear blinkers when he runs in the Group Three BRC Sprint.
Talented gelding Bergerac will wear blinkers in his comeback in the Group Three BRC Sprint at Doomben with bigger things in mind.
Trainer Steve Tregea had added blinkers to Bergerac’s race day gear for the Australian Turf Club Trophy at the Gold Coast two weeks ago but decided not to start because of the heavy track.
Bergerac and two other Tregea horses, Prioritise and Niccanova, were among the stars of the spring and summer in Brisbane.
Tregea trialled all three at Toowoomba on Tuesday, with Bergerac winning, Prioritise third and Niccanova fifth.
The big question for Toowoomba-based Tregea is whether they can measure up to the better southern horses in the winter.
Tregea accepted with Bergerac and Niccanova in Saturday’s BRC Sprint (1350m) and with Prioritise in the Group One Doomben Cup (2000m).
Tregea said he had been happy with the way all three spelled and had done since returning.
“I have entered them for some of the best races but there is plenty around for them if they don’t measure up,” Tregea said.
“I have put blinkers on Bergerac. I have been waiting for the winter to do it because I think it might give him the edge he needs.
“I think he has thrown a couple of races away after looking at other horses near the line.
“I entered Prioritise for the Doomben Cup. Like the others he is fit and well. We will just have to see where all three sit with the better type horses.”
Tregea has stayed loyal to apprentice Michael Murphy who will ride Bergerac and Prioritise even though he cannot claim.
“Michael knows the horses so why not,” he said.
James Orman, who rode Niccanova in Tuesday’s trial, will have the BRC Sprint ride.
