Origin III match preview: Queensland v NSW
The stage is set for yet another State of Origin series decider at Suncorp Stadium, with Queensland Maroons set to host a new-look New South Wales outfit on Wednesday night.
The Maroons were disappointing in game two with their set-completion rate, slower play-the-ball speed, and countless missed tackles, losing by 20 points at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on June 26.
NSW’s turn in fortunes after a heavy defeat in Sydney came through keeping all 17 players on the field, a stronger kicking game from recalled halfback Mitchell Moses, and the devastating blend of presence and skill from centre Latrell Mitchell.
The Blues and coach Michael Maguire will be without Mitchell (foot) for the decider, with Newcastle’s Bradman Best named to return in the centres following his debut in last year’s series.
Maroons coach Billy Slater has made several changes following hamstring injuries to his wing combination of Murray Taulagi and Xavier Coates. Selwyn Cobbo has been named on the wing, with Dane Gagai starting in the centres. Jaydn Su’A has been dropped for veteran forward Kurt Capewell, and Kalyn Ponga has been named on the bench.

State of Origin: QLD v NSW match predictions
The Maroons have not lost an Origin decider at Lang Park since 2005, when Andrew Johns inspired the Blues to a famous 22-point win. Queensland have won each of their last eight clashes at this ground, and with some experienced performers returning, expect the home side to secure a dominant win at the safe $1.82 price with top online bookmakers.
Valentine Holmes has had an underwhelming season for both the Cowboys and the Maroons. However, he’s had brilliant success at Suncorp Stadium for Queensland, recording the first try in each of his last four appearances here. Shifting from the centres to the wing, this is the perfect occasion for Holmes to return to form with a try ($2.15).
Angus Crichton’s form for the Roosters at NRL level has deserved not only a call-up to the Blues side, but more success in the Origin arena with ball in hand than we’ve seen so far. The back-rower made an enormous improvement in game two, recording a whopping nine tackle breaks and running for 174 metres. Against a slower, older opponent in Capewell, Crichton is a great value play as an anytime tryscorer ($4.10).
