State of Origin bets that paid big in Game II
New South Wales produced a remarkable turnaround on Wednesday evening, thrashing Queensland in game two of the 2024 State of Origin series in Melbourne.
It was a first-half clinic that did the damage for the Blues. Writing a fresh chapter in the Origin record books, they ran in six tries in the first 40 minutes to lead 34-0 at the break.
While Queensland clawed their way back for a somewhat respectable 38-18 loss, online bookmakers still paid out a range of long-odds bets on the game.
Tryscorer markets deliver healthy returns
Those who correctly picked the first and last tryscorers of the game received the biggest payouts.
New South Wales forward Liam Martin, who crossed after a sustained spell of pressure in the 10th minute, paid an eye-watering $29 to open the scoring.
Queensland’s Murray Taulagi also generated a big return by scoring the last try of the match. Those who predicted this received a $13 payday.
Blues wingers Brian To’o and Zac Lomax both generated $6 returns for those who backed them to score two or more tries.
Several head-to-head markets also paid well.
NSW fullback Dylan Edwards scoring more tries than Reece Walsh had odds of $4.50, while Martin against Jaydn Su’A was at $7. Both bets came through.
But it was those brave enough to wrap a few tryscoring bets into a multi that garnered the greatest returns.
Betting on Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Zac Lomax and Latrell Mitchell all to score a try held a return of $15.47. When the ‘Hammer’ crossed in the 58th minute, this bet paid.
Margin markets pay well, but huge returns just miss
Those who bet on the score line of New South Wales vs Queensland also generated some nice returns.
Outright betting at rugby league bookies had the Blues paying $1.72 to win. However, a win by 13 or more points upped the odds to $4.
Some of the more specific margin markets held higher returns.
The eventual result — New South Wales by 20 — paid $8.50 for those who bet the team to win by 15-20 points. This just missed the even more lucrative band of 21-25, which had a $17 payout.
Had the Blues maintained their half-time margin of 34 points, there would have been some huge returns. A New South Wales win by 31-35 paid an incredible $41.
