The Big Bash League returns to the MCG for the local derby between the Stars and Renegades.
The Melbourne Renegades have lost their last four matches and will be desperate for a win to stop sliding down the competition ladder, while the Melbourne Stars won their last match against the Strikers on New Year’s Eve.
For the Renegades, with just seven games left in the season, they will need their top order batters to stand up to help their franchise into a position where they will play in the Finals. Meanwhile, a win for the Stars will see them advance towards the top four despite their slow start to the season.
The local derby is sure to deliver drama and tension throughout the evening. The Renegades form slump does not look like stopping any time soon, and the Stars have too many big game players for the Renegades to negate. The Stars are at excellent odds of $1.77.
Joe Clarke has been in some of the best form of his career early in BBL12. Opening the batting for the Stars, Clarke is unfazed by oppositions using spin or pace to start against him, as he uses his 360 degree range of shots to take down opposition attacks. On the big stage, Clarke will be standing up again for the Stars and looking to move to the top of the BBL run scoring ladder again by being the Stars leading run scorer in this match paying $4.25.
The Stars skipper has been unusually low on wickets in BBL12 as he also juggles his new role as Stars captain. Adam Zampa is one of the best T20 spin bowlers on the planet and is due for a big performance. On his home ground against a weak Renegades batting order, Zampa won’t get many better opportunities to get amongst the wickets and should do so Tuesday, taking 3+ wickets for the Stars paying $6.50.
KEY MATCH UP: Trent Boult v Martin Guptill
There is a strong Kiwi flavour in this Melbourne derby with former international Stars Boult and Guptill set to clash at the top of the order when the Renegades begin their batting innings. Both these players have spent years together in the New Zealand national set up and will have an intimate understanding of how the other plays, and how to take advantage of their weaknesses. The knowledge these two will impart to their teammates is going to be vital, and which ever of these two players leads their side better to start their innings will go a long way to deciding the outcome of the match.
