Starc leads Capitals to victory in first Super Over of IPL 2025
Delhi Capitals beat Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Thursday morning (AEST), winning the first Super Over of the 2025 IPL season thanks to Mitchell Starc’s heroics at the death.
Coming in as $1.81 favourites across cricket betting apps, DC batted first and made 5/188 from their 20 overs.
Opener Abhishek Porel (49 from 37) spearheaded the first half of Delhi’s total with help from KL Rahul (38 from 32), but when the pair fell in the 13th and 14th overs respectively, the hosts were left teetering at 4/106.
Tristan Stubbs (34* from 18) and Axar Patel (34 from 14) launched a brilliant counterattack, however, upping DC’s run-rate significantly and powering them to a competitive total.
Set 189 to win, Rajasthan were on cruise-control until the 18th over.
While Sanju Samson (31 from 19) retired hurt after taking a ball to the ribs in the sixth over and Riyan Parag (8 from 11) struggled to find any momentum, Yashasvi Jaiswal (51 from 37) and Nitish Rana (51 from 28) scored freely.
The latter combined with Dhruv Jurel (26 from 17) to bat RR into a commanding position, with the visitors needing 28 runs from 15 balls and live cricket betting odds firmly in their favour.
Two brilliant Starc overs flipped the script, however, with the Aussie quick going for 16 runs from his final two overs, taking one wicket and generating a run-out.
This meant that after 40 overs of cricket, scores were tied and the match headed to a Super Over.
Starc had the ball for DC and again produced some brilliance, ending in back-to-back run-outs to restrict RR to 11 runs.
Needing 12 to win, Rahul held his nerve and struck seven runs from the first three balls before Stubbs sent Sandeep Sharma’s fourth ball over the ropes to seal a dramatic victory.
After the match, Starc explained that his experience under pressure was key to his Super Over heroics.
“I’ve played long enough that everyone knows what I’m going to do,” he said.
“Just backed my execution. Run in with a clear plan and try to execute it.
“Sometimes it doesn’t come off, today it did.
“You can play that over 10 more times and do 10 different things and it can go different ways.
“I got away with a couple there.”
Delhi establish a two-point lead at the top of the table with their victory and are the only team to have lost just once this season.
However, BetOnline still has Royal Challengers Bengaluru at shorter odds ($5) to win the 2025 IPL title, with DC at $5.50 alongside Punjab Kings.
