Second ODI: Sri Lanka v Australia match preview

Australia will be hoping to salvage a series draw when they face Sri Lanka in the second ODI this Friday in Colombo.

It was a disappointing display in the opener from the Aussies as they were soundly beaten by 49 runs. Despite having the home side at 5/55, Australia couldn’t capitalise, with Charith Asalanka’s 127 leading Sri Lanka to a total of 214.

In response, Australia’s top order crumbled to 4/31 before they were bowled out for 165. Sri Lankan off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana took 4/40, while Alex Carey (41) and Aaron Hardie (32) were the only notable run-makers for the Aussies.

Both the quicks and the spinners had plenty of assistance in the first game at R. Premadasa Stadium, and the same bowler-friendly conditions are expected in the series closer.

Sri Lanka v Australia team news – Second ODI

After such a strong result in game one, don’t expect many changes to the Sri Lankan side for this clash, particularly in the bowling lineup.

On the other hand, Australia are expected to make some changes. All-rounder Glenn Maxwell is expected to return to the side in place of youngster Cooper Connolly, who struggled in the opener. Josh Inglis is also in the frame for selection, while Travis Head looks set to be rested once again.

With favourable conditions for spin, along with a lack of bowling depth in the Aussie squad, don’t be surprised if the likes of Ben Dwarshuis and Tanveer Sangha come into the equation as well.

Sri Lanka v Australia cricket betting predictions

Apart from a stellar knock from Charith Asalanka, the Sri Lankan batting lineup struggled in the opener, with just one other batsman passing 20. Although Australia struggled, they should be too strong on this occasion with some experienced batsman returning to the side. As favourites, back the Aussies at $1.50 with top cricket bookies.

Bowling at an economy rate of just 2.56 runs an over in the opener, Nathan Ellis strangled the Sri Lankan attack and earned himself two wickets. His collection of slower balls makes him tough to get away, while bowling at the death makes him a certain threat to take wickets. At $2.10 with major online betting sites, back Ellis to pick up two or more wickets.

Maheesh Theekshana was the pick of Sri Lanka’s bowlers in the opening game, finishing with four wickets. At the same venue, with similar conditions on the cards, he stands out as the obvious threat. Expect Theekshana’s spin to lead the way for Sri Lanka once again at $4.33 with top online bookmakers.
