It is no surprise to see 2014 champions Germany and the ever-dangerous Brazil vying for outright favouritism at Russia 2018. Spain have plenty of pedigree left over from their title win in 2012, while pundits and punters alike are raving about a France squad that has no room for the likes of Karim Benzema, Kingsley Coman, Alexandre Lacazette, Anthony Martial and Adrien Rabiot.
The absence of Chile, Italy, the Netherlands and the United States makes the group stage an easier-than-expected proposition for most of the top teams. Spain and Portugal in Group B is an obvious highlight, as is England’s clash with a Belgium side that is loaded with Premier League talent. If Mohamed Salah recovers from his bung shoulder in time, Egypt could well give Uruguay a run for their money in Group A.
All the usual suspects feature at the upper end of betting for player of the tournament. Lionel Messi won it as Argentina romped to the final in 2014, and the Barcelona superstar is well liked to do it again, but it is Neymar who tops the pops after a superb season at Paris Saint-Germain. Keep an eye on Kevin De Bruyne, who should come into the equation if Belgium go deep.
Neymar and Messi are the unsurprising favourites for top goalscorer at Russia 2018. France’s Antoine Griezmann has scored 13 international goals in the past two years, while a good run from reigning European champs Portugal would put Cristiano Ronaldo well and truly in the mix. The likes of Romelu Lukaku, Luis Suarez and Sergio Aguero are very tempting propositions at odds.
Brazil’s Alisson has jumped to the head of a star-studded queue after an excellent season between the sticks for Roma. The Germans have yet to announce which of Manuel Neuer and Marc-Andre ter Stegen will man the posts in Russia – a situation that sees both goalies listed among the top prospects for most clean sheets. David De Gea will be hard to beat if Spain put together a strong campaign.
