The final match of round three for the 2022 NRL Premiership sees storylines collide with the Canterbury Bulldogs taking on the Manly Sea Eagles at 4 Pines Park on Sunday evening.
Both clubs have had vastly different starts to the season. Canterbury narrowly beat the Cowboys before going down to the Broncos, whereas Manly have suffered heavy losses to the Panthers and Roosters. When Manly and Canterbury have collided in history, the Bulldogs have won 20 times of 38 clashes. However, recent history has seen Manly win by a total of 84 points, including a 66-0 flogging in July 2021.
Manly have started their 2022 season much the same as their 2021 season but look a completely different outfit compared to the side that could score 30 points at the drop of a hat and pound opposition teams into submission last season. Many are blaming Manly’s start to 2022 on fullback Tom Trbojevic, but it’s the Eagles forward pack that seem incapable of making meters in the middle. While they’ve played two dominant forward packs to start the season, only back rower Haumole Olakau’atu has run for over 100m in both games. This is the largest issue Manly face if they’re to come close to winning their first game of the 2022 season.

Fortunately for Manly, they face the forward pack of Canterbury that are largely ill-disciplined with the likes of Tevita Pangai Jr and Jack Hetherington who regularly make errors and find themselves on report or in the sin bin. Manly have their biggest opportunity so far to win the middle third of the field Sunday and, in doing so, will ultimately unlock Tom Trbojevic and the left-hand edge of Olakau’atu, Morgan Harper and Jason Saab.
Canterbury have shown flashes of brilliance as off-season signings Matt Dufty, Josh Addo-Carr, as well as hooker Jeremy Marshall-King opened up the Brisbane Broncos multiple times, with Marshall-King scoring a try. The star of the show for the Bulldogs last week was Matt Burton by the length of the Flemington straight, as his spiral bombs proved so potent, the Brisbane backs would still be losing sleep. The role that Burton plays in this side cannot be understated as his running game will also unlock the offensive power on the left edge for Canterbury with Brent Naden and Addo-Carr.
Sea Eagles vs Bulldogs predictions & best bets
This clash to finish the round will be a battle of left-edge attack versus right-edge defence. With Manly hosting, and having started against much better opposition this season, expect the Sea Eagles to get their first win of 2022. As Manly’s forward pack should improve and show more go-forward, look for Tom Trbojevic to find his way into the game to score a try in the match. Haumole Olakau’atu will score as well, with Manly winning by 13+ points.
