Sea Eagles v Raiders Rd 9 match preview

Friday night NRL action in round nine kicks off on Sydney’s northern beaches with the Manly Sea Eagles hosting the Canberra Raiders at 4 Pines Park.

The Sea Eagles have been well supported, shortening from $1.60 into $1.22 in head-to-head markets with top NRL bookmakers. This is likely due to captain Daly Cherry-Evans’ successful appeal to downgrade a Grade 2 Dangerous Throw charge at the NRL Judiciary, freeing him to take part in this game.

The Raiders struggled in their loss to the Broncos a fortnight ago before being belted by the Sharks in Canberra last weekend. Unfortunately for the visitors, their hosts have scored 30 or more points in three of their last four matches, including wins over the Panthers and Eels.

Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart has opted to rest young gun Chevy Stewart, with Albert Hopoate named to start at fullback. James Schiller has been dropped to the reserves, with Nick Cotric named as his replacement on the wing. Manly Sea Eagles coach Anthony Seibold has been forced to replace Haumole Olakau’atu (suspended) in the starting side. Ethan Bullemor moves from the bench to start in the second row, with Toafofoa Sipley named to return from a knee injury via the interchange.

Manly Sea Eagles v Canberra Raiders predictions

The Sea Eagles have won three of their last five clashes against the Raiders; however, the most recent loss came with Reuben Garrick and brothers Tom and Jake Trbojevic all out. The Raiders have lost each of their last seven matches against teams in the top eight on the NRL ladder, while Manly have covered the line in each of their last five games at 4 Pines Park. Expect the Sea Eagles’ strong form at home to continue as they cover the -13.5 handicap ($1.90).

The Sea Eagles have lost the first half in each of the last eight games where they’ve started as favourites. The Raiders, meanwhile, pride themselves on strong starts and will be keen to capitalise on this trend, particularly in the middle third of the field. With added experience in the Raiders squad, they are a great value bet to win the first half ($3.75).

Fortunately for Manly, they have shown they can overcome these first-half woes. On a couple of those occasions, captain Cherry-Evans has been the man to lead from the front and put his side in a winning position, scoring two second-half tries when the Sea Eagles have been behind at the break.
