The NRL’s main event for night one of Magic Round at Suncorp Stadium with a blockbuster clash between the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles and Brisbane Broncos.
Manly are the ‘home’ team for this clash at $1.65, but the real value looks to be with the Broncos as the $2.25 outsider with the top betting sites.
They’ve strung three wins on-the-trot for the first time since 2019 and have been gifted an extra home game.
Their last two performances at ‘The Cauldron’ have been excellent, with a fast finish over the Bulldogs and a gritty win over a terrific Cronulla side.
Expect to see plenty of action at the line, with the Brisbane Broncos being given just +3.5.
The Manly Sea Eagles come into the game off the back a good win over the Tigers at home where they ran up 34 points in an entertaining game.
While Tom Trbojevic did have one moment where he was upstaged by an unlikely source in Luke Garner, but his return from injury was otherwise solid.
His Magic Round performance last year blew the Broncos off the park and he will be keen to do so again.
He secured a double in a 50-6 win, so perhaps there is some value in looking at him to repeat that performance by scoring two tries.
The other man who might be worth a sniff is Lachlan Croker as a roughie. With the weather predicted to be quite wet over the weekend, he is either a good chance to sneak over from acting half or in support play from an offload close to the line. He will be a juicy odds and could make Magic Round exactly that for punters.
Brisbane’s big challenge in the coming weeks is living up to expectations now that they’ve started to show what they’re capable of.
While they have the underdog status for this game, their fans expectations have risen in the last month and the media are waiting cautiously to see if they’re for real.
Payne Haas and Luke Capewell will be huge inclusions for their forward pack from their respective injuries.
While those inclusions add punch to their middle, it’s been their edge’s that have been in superb form in recent weeks.
Herbie Farnworth and Kotoni Staggs make defenses nervous and their speed and power allow them to get on the outside of their opposition, which makes them both excellent option as anytime try scorers.
Key Match Up: Adam Reynolds vs Daly Cherry-Evans
Adam Reynolds and Daly Cherry-Evans are two of the best halfbacks in the competition and anyone going to Magic Round night one is going to be treated to a position battle that might just be the best of the weekend. If you can back either of them to kick a 40/20, take whatever those odds are and run to the bank.
