The Nazaré Big Wave Challenge unfolded in massive 25-35 foot waves at Praia do Norte, Portugal, showcasing some of the best big wave surfing performances of the World Surf League season.

With consistent conditions providing waves in every heat, surfers battled through strong offshore winds and bumpy surfaces to push the limits of their sport.

As the swell built throughout the afternoon, teams elevated their performance, treating fans to an electrifying display of skill and courage.

Clement Roseyro (FRA) stood out with a 21.83 total score, earning him the Men’s Best Performance Award.

His highest score of the day—a 7.50 in Heat 1—set the tone for an impressive showing.

Competing in his second Nazaré Big Wave Challenge, Roseyro refined his unique approach to big wave surfing, claiming one of the event’s top honours.

“I’m grateful to Nic von Rupp. We’re a really good team,” Roseyro said.

“He taught me a lot, especially about driving the jet ski, and we push each other to perform.”

Two-time defending Best Men’s Performance Award winner Lucas Chianca (BRA) finished runner-up, while event debutant Ben Larg (SCO) impressed by securing third place.

Larg, a last-minute call-up replacing Garrett McNamara (HAW), showcased sharp technique alongside teammate Andrew Cotton (GBR), proving his skill in the tow-in discipline.

Returning to competition after the birth of her first child, Justine Dupont (FRA) made a stunning comeback, securing the Women’s Best Performance Award.

The former event winner looked at home in the heavy conditions, catching eight waves to rack up an impressive total score.

“I used to have a lot of fear before,” Dupont said.

“Now, after the baby, I’m more worried about my child. At least it takes my mind off the fear!”

Dupont’s teammate Eric Rebiere (FRA) struggled to find waves but contributed a solid early score.

Meanwhile, Michelle des Bouillons (BRA), assisted by Ian Cosenza (BRA), claimed second place, towing into some of the biggest and cleanest waves of the day.

Laura Crane (GBR), in her event debut, finished third, also helping Antonio Laureano (POR) catch several standout waves.

The Best Team Performance Award went to Nic von Rupp (POR) and Clement Roseyro (FRA), who set the bar high from Heat 1.

Von Rupp’s precision towing Roseyro into massive waves proved pivotal, while Roseyro’s aggressive rail work and deep positioning secured key scores.

Von Rupp pushed his limits early on, suffering a few heavy wipeouts, but rebounded in the second session.

The duo’s combined efforts saw them top the leaderboard and claim the prestigious team title.

“I fell a lot in the first heat, but I pushed really hard,” Von Rupp said.

“We trained all season for this. We’re stoked Clement got two good scores today.”

Defending team champions Lucas Chianca (BRA) and Pedro Vianna (BRA) put up a strong fight but ultimately fell short, despite a valiant second heat push.

“It was a really hard day,” Vianna admitted.

“The waves weren’t that big, and with the wind, it was really bumpy. It all comes down to choosing the best waves.”
