It will be a grand opening to the 2022 NRL Premiership for the Sydney Roosters when they take on the Newcastle Knights this Saturday afternoon at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Rooster captain James Tedesco will lead his team out onto the ground that Easts have a 76% win strike rate on. Bolstered by 31 wins from 44 occasions against the Knights, it’s very easy to see why the Roosters are such hot favourites.

Debuting as captain for the club he hopes to win a premiership for, Kalyn Ponga will have his work cut out for him with the losses of Mitchell Pearce and Connor Watson over the offseason. Including the loss of Saifiti twin Daniel, the Knights will have their backs up against the wall right from kick off.

The Sydney Roosters welcome back Origin representative Lindsay Collins from an ACL injury into a forward pack already brimming with talent and aggression. Angus Crichton has recently resigned and will be looking to perform as strong as ever, while Victor Radley has doubled down on his playing style, unwilling to relent in his defensive mindset.

For all the talent that Easts have on their roster, it’s mind-blowing to think Saturday will be the first game that Victor Radley, Luke Keary and young gun Sam Walker will take the field at the same time. This trio will be supported by another incredible one, with James Tedesco at the back with Joey Manu and Daniel Tupou, this is one of the strongest Rugby League outfits in the NRL.

On the other side of the park, it’s not a lack of talent that the Newcastle Knights possess, as Kalyn Ponga will team up with Bradman Best and Jake Clifford, a trio rarely on the field together last season through injury. One key man in this side is Dane Gagai. Playing some of his best football in his first stint with Newcastle, before defecting to South Sydney, Gagai will need to find his Queensland Origin form to give Newcastle the best shot at success.

A new addition to the Knights forward pack is Kurt Mann, starting in the lock position, a man so tough that some say he would “put his head where others wouldn’t put their foot”. Mann will be a key piece in locking up the centre third of the Knights defence, in conjunction with Jacob Saifiti and David Klemmer. Tyson Frizell lines up in the second row and, regardless of what side of the field he his, will have his hands full with either Sitili Tupouniua or Angus Crichton.

It’s expected that the Roosters win this, and with ease. It’s easy to see them winning by a margin larger than 13 points, as they’ve done on their last two occasions against the Knights. With the strength of this forward pack in mind, expect to see Sitili Tupouniua revert to his try-scoring ways of the 2021 season and cross the line at any time during the match.
