The Sydney Roosters will host the North Queensland Cowboys at the Sydney Cricket Ground in what will be one of the most important games of the 2022 NRL season.

The Roosters need a win to help secure a top eight berth, while the Cowboys need a win to keep the ‘they can’t beat good teams in Sydney’ crowd at bay.

The Roosters have won four games in a row, with their latest a 34-16 demolition of Brisbane.

The Cowboys have won four of their last five and put the Bulldogs away 28-14 last weekend, so neither fan base can argue about the form guide.

The Roosters since the bye have looked far more like the team many thought they would be in 2022. Apart from a second half against Manly where they lost focus, they’ve been ruthless.

They have scored 54, 42 and 34 points in the other three games and one feels as though their credentials for the premiership will get a big shot in the arm if they’re able to defeat the Cowboys.

They have the Storm and Rabbitohs to come in the run home, but a shake-up of the competition starts somewhere, and even though they’re a $1.62 favourite, many would see this as somewhat of an upset based on the seasons results.

James Tedesco almost feels like a moral to score a try at $2.25. He almost always steps up when his team needs him and in their biggest game so far this year, he will rise.

The 1-12 margin at $2.95 will get the most attention for those backing the Chooks. The step up in class almost ensures a close game.

The Cowboys will want this game bad. They have wins over Manly and St George-Illawarra in Sydney in recent weeks, but this feels like a game where those who aren’t taking notice of them will look a little closer.

Whenever the Cowboys have won regularly in Sydney, they go to a Grand Final.

In 2005 they had to win back-to-back sudden death Finals games in New South Wales to advance make the Grand Final, while in 2015 they went 5-1 before winning their maiden Premiership. In 2017 it was three sudden death Finals games to make the most unlikely Grand Final appearance.

They’ll love the fact they come in as a $2.30 outsider with BetOnline. In those previous times they’ve had success they’ve thrived on being the underdog and this weekend will be one of those days.

The $3.40 for a 1-12 point win is terrific value, while Jeremiah Nanai at $21 is a red hot throw-at-the-stumps to be the game’s first tryscorer. He is having a Steve Menzies-like try scoring season for a forward and he didn’t get one against the Bulldogs, so the numbers suggest he is due.

Key matchup: James Tedesco vs Scott Drinkwater

You cannot go past Scott Drinkwater vs James Tedesco. Drinkwater is pizzazz and panash, while Tedesco is an iron horse. Both men will get space at certain times in the contest and the crowd should move to the edge of their seats when it happens. Drinkwater has a step, jink, double-clutch or a flick pass that can embarrass any defender, while Tedesco’s nose for the football means he is forever in the contest and can wear you down with enthusiasm. One of the best match-ups all season.
