Roosters secure Connor Watson, Spencer Leniu on long-term deals
The Sydney Roosters announced on Monday, August 19, that Connor Watson and Spencer Leniu have inked two-year contract extensions, securing their positions with the team until the end of the 2027 NRL Premiership season.
Connor Watson, 28, debuted with the Roosters in 2016 and has been with the team ever since, except for a three-year stint with the Newcastle Knights from 2018 to 2021.
With a total of 141 top-grade games under his belt, including 75 with the Roosters, Watson expressed his joy at extending his stay with the club.
“I’m happy and proud to extend my future with the Roosters. This Club means a lot to me, and so do the people in it,” said Watson to the press on Monday.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to keep working with such a talented group of players and staff and I’m excited to continue to bring my best every day,” he added.
Spencer Leniu, aged 23, joined the Sydney Roosters at the beginning of the 2024 NRL season and has quickly become a favourite among fans.
The dynamic forward has already clinched three premierships during his time with the Penrith Panthers and secured a State of Origin Blues debut this year.
Reflecting on his experience, Leniu expressed gratitude for being part of such an organisation.
“I’m grateful to be part of such a prestigious club like the Roosters, and I’m so proud to continue my time here. It’s felt like home since day one,” said Leniu.
“I’m excited about what the future holds, and I’m committed to working hard with Trent and my teammates every single day, to keep doing my job for the team,” he added.
The Roosters will be hoping to secure a few more contracts as they are set to lose several key players heading into 2025, including Joseph Suaali’i (rugby union), Jared Waerea-Hargreaves (Hull KR), Joseph Manu (rugby union), Luke Keary (Catalans), and Sitili Tupouniua (Bulldogs).
With three rounds left in the NRL season and the Roosters currently third on the ladder, they will be looking to send off a few of their senior players with a 16th NRL Grand Final win. The top online bookmakers are currently offering $3.75 for this outcome.
