Sunday afternoon rugby league will return to Canberra for Round 13 when the Raiders host the Sydney Roosters in a rematch of the 2019 NRL Grand Final.
The Raiders will be without Josh Papali’i and Jack Wighton due to State of Origin commitments, while James Tedesco, Lindsay Collins and Daniel Tupou will be rested from the Tricolours outfit.
Canberra won a lot of respect for the tenacity they played with in the 28-20 loss to Parramatta last round, but some of their decision making showed they still have some of the issues that have plagued them for the last 18 months.
It was only a penalty goal at the start of the second half which stopped them from being held scoreless once again, so whatever happens at halftime needs to change. Have a sage smoking ceremony – something, anything.
Their effort and defensive decision making over the last month has been the highlight of their game, and you’d hope with Jamal Fogarty playing his second game that they will be more fluent as the weeks roll on.
Which brings us to the match against the Roosters, who are warming to the task nicely at the halfway point of the season.
Canberra have only scored one try this year in the second half against top six opposition. That is 200 total minutes for a lone consolation try when the game was in the books against Melbourne in Round 5.

The $8 for the Raiders/Roosters halftime-fulltime double is hard to ignore, especially when we just saw it happen against Parramatta.
The win does look beyond them in this game but the +4 handicap could be one market to have some fun with.
The Roosters might have lost their best player and captain, James Tedesco, but they can still piece together a serviceable backline.
Joseph Manu will move to fullback and we could well see what the full unlocked version of Manu could be.
It is no secret he wants to be a fullback in the NRL and whenever he has had the chance in recent seasons he has brained it.
He is $2.65 to score a try at any stage in the match and $11.50 to get the first, which plenty of punters will jump on.
The forward pack and bench rotation remains largely unchanged but Terrell May will be expected to play more minutes with the absence of Collins.
Their win over Cronulla last week felt like they flexed their muscles a bit, even if they had some shaky moments early in the second half.
Canberra will be hoping those same shaky moments will repeat themselves, but if they’re banking on that, you can book in a Roosters 1-12 point win at $2.75.
Key matchup: Xavier Savage vs Joseph Manu
Canberra’s attack gets more predictable the longer the game goes, and when they are forced to change, it is often too late. Xavier Savage is a player who is still finding his feet at NRL level, but he has a sense of unpredictability which could break the Roosters open.
Once Canberra started offloading late against Parramatta they found space, but before that they shut up shop and Parramatta punished them in defence. Savage has to be sniffing around the ruck constantly, and if he gets a chance, he will light up GIO Stadium.
Much the same can be said for Joseph Manu; he has has forever wanted a licence to roam, and he can do so freely with the number one on his back. Expect both players to generate chances off second-phase play in what should be a cracking game.
Raiders vs Roosters betting predictions
Canberra will show again they’re capable of matching it with top teams for a certain amount of time before the Roosters come over the top of them to get the win at the 1-12 margin.
