Rabbitohs vs Roosters betting preview

If you ask a South Sydney Rabbitohs fan what the time is when the clock strikes seven, it is now accepted protocol for them to yell back “SIXTY TO EIGHT!” Their last meeting in round 20 last season was one of the most extraordinary nights in NRL history. Many believed the Roosters were on track to get to another NRL Grand Final, and they held an 8-0 lead early against their arch nemesis. But 60 unanswered points later, they were making a meek exit from the 2020 premiership race.

That loss will have hurt the Sydney Roosters, and they’ve started the 2021 NRL season in red-hot form. They are absolutely primed to get the chocolates in this one as the $1.60 favourites. Coach Trent Robinson has also confirmed Victor Radley will make his return in this game, and he is a huge inclusion for the Tricolours. Souths may have been everyone’s premiership choice in the pre-season, but it looks a tall order for them.

Key matchup: Luke Keary vs Adam Reynolds

Luke Keary has been the best half in the competition in the opening fortnight, and it’s not been particularly close. Adam Reynolds shapes as the key to stopping the Roosters, and it all rests on his right boot. He has long had the best short-kicking game in the NRL, and he will need to be at his best if the Bunnies are to have any chance of victory. If he can’t build any sustained pressure, you feel as though Keary and James Tedesco will have too much class for them on the edges. Keary has six try assists in two games and has put tries on a platter for the likes of Tedesco and Brett Morris, so the left-edge defence of South Sydney has best beware.

The lethal left came up big for us with Alex Johnston, Latrell Mitchell and Cody Walker all scoring against Manly, but it will be much tougher for all three of them to cross this week. Johnston might be the most likely of the three to cross and should be kept in your multis as an anytime tryscorer, but it is hard to see where the Roosters are weak in defence when they’ve leaked just 10 points to start the season. A sneaky pick might be Dane Gagai, who could use his footwork and strength to get the better of Josh Morris. However, we think it’s going to be a long night for the Rabbitohs and they’ll lose their second game of the year.

Brett Morris and James Tedesco have been scoring tries for fun, and they both look a fantastic bet each week. Back-to-back hat-tricks for BMoz created history last round, but the odds for him to score more than one this week feel way longer than any price you can get from NRL bookmakers. The Souths defence around the ruck has been vulnerable so far this season and if they aren’t switched on, Tedesco will carve them up. Freddy Lussick is still very much a rookie at dummy half, but so good is the coaching of Trent Robinson, he will have some plays ready to nap out the big boppers from the Rabbitohs. We like the Roosters at the 1-12 margin and don’t mind Luke Keary to continue his hot form and score a try at anytime.

Rabbitohs vs Roosters betting predictions

The Roosters will win this battle, but we feel Souths will win the war later in the season. The Tricolours are near their peak, while the Bunnies feel like they have a long way to go to reach their potential. The 1-12 margin is hard to ignore in what will be Sydney’s first tough game this season.
