Following a great win over the Cronulla Sharks, the Brisbane Broncos travel south to take on the Rabbitohs in Sydney to kick off Round 9 of the 2022 NRL Premiership. The Broncos have suffered key losses in the forward pack, with Payne Haas and Kurt Capewell ruled out with injuries, while the Rabbitohs have named a largely unchanged side heading into Thursday’s clash. Pat Carrigan does return from injury for the Broncos, bolstering the forward pack that will need to be strong if the to beat the Bunnies.
Of 36 clashes between these two clubs, Brisbane have won 23. They beat the Bunnies in Round 1 this year, a match that was expected to be a Bunnies win with the absence of former club captain Adam Reynolds. Thursday night will be Reynolds’ first game against his old side, and he’s already beaten the Bulldogs in Sydney so far this year. Brisbane have been in incredible form without winning in recent weeks, while the Bunnies lost to the Tigers two weeks ago before beating a 12-man Manly outfit last week. The value in this clash is with Brisbane by the short winning margin of 1-12 points, paying $5.50 with Bet365.
The Broncos beat an in-form Sharks side last week, and the clash between Kotoni Staggs and Siosifa Talakai was one of the defining factors in that match. Staggs, and the Broncos’ left-hand defence, took time and space away from the Sharks attack, limiting their impact immensely. The Broncos will be looking to do much the same this week in a bid to limit the impact of the Bunnies’ strong left-hand side while turning defence into attack. This opens up great odds ($2.95) for Staggs to score a try at any time, as he is marking up against the rookie Isaiah Tass.
With rain predicted for Sydney on Thursday, this opens two markets that can be safely played in. The slope to the edges of the Accor Stadium field results in less attacking football towards the edges, and wet weather makes it even harder to score. Therefore, eight minutes or later for the time of the first try looks a safe play, paying $1.78. Another market is the unders on the total match points, with the total set at 40.5 points.

Key matchup: Cody Walker vs Tyson Gamble
The clash of these two halves players will be one to keep an eye on, as both men can run hot during a match. Both are more liable than most for a head pop, but if they’re able to avoid one, can have incredible impact on a game in their own right. Cody Walker is one of the greatest attacking players in the NRL on his day, while Tyson Gamble often provides the emotional spark that’s the catalyst for Brisbane to fight out a strong defensive performance and get the win. The individual of these two with the most control over their emotions will be the one who’ll have greater positive impact over this game and put their side in a better position to win.
