Rabbitohs v Raiders match preview

Super Saturday NRL action wraps up in Sydney with the Rabbitohs hosting the Canberra Raiders at Accor Stadium. Both clubs suffered big losses in their round 12 clashes, which club will bounce back successfully this weekend?

The Rabbitohs have made several changes to their side with Latrell Mitchell, Cameron Murray and Jai Arrow being call up for State of Origin duties. Blake Taaffe will start at fullback with Liam Knight at lock as well as Shaquai Mitchell returning from injury on the interchange bench with Tallis Duncan who will make his NRL debut.

The Raiders have also been forced to make changes with Corey Harawira-Naera coming into the starting side for Hudson Young who is set to make his debut for the New South Wales Blues. Elliot Whitehead (suspension) has been replaced by Corey Horsburgh with Pasami Saulo and Nick Cotric coming into the starting 17.

These two clubs have met on 31 occasions which have seen the Raiders win 17 times. While the home side deserves to be favourites, the Raiders have won 60% of their games at Accor Stadium. The Raiders are less disrupted in their side, retaining key middle forwards and players from their spine. Despite the Rabbitohs retaining Cody Walker and Damien Cook, the Raiders are great value at $2.08 with Marantelli Bet to get a win on the road.

Matthew Timoko struggled on both sides of the football last week against the high-flying Sea Eagles, but spent weeks prior establishing himself as one of the most damaging centres in the NRL. Timoko can carry the ball for over 200m per game, breaking multiple tackles and defensive lines en route to scoring tries. He is a strong ball runner with the ball handling skills to score off kicks as well as using his strength and footwork. Marking up on Isaiah Tass, Timoko should be able to overpower his opposing centre and score at any time during the match ($3.05).

Jack Wighton will be getting his first look at his future club on Saturday night, looking to prove to Rabbitohs head coach Jason Demetriou he will be able to cover any position in the back line. The Raiders five-eighth will be sure to show off his strong running game and footwork to audition for the centre position, a role he has played brilliantly for the New South Wales Blues and Australian Kangaroos in the last 12 months. Look for Wighton to find his best form and find the in goal area at any time during the match ($2.60).

Michael Chee Kam will have his biggest test of the season with Corey ‘Big Red’ Horsburgh lining up on the left edge for the Raiders. ‘Big Red’ has been in red-hot form for the Raiders over the last six weeks, putting his name forward for State of Origin selection for the Queensland Maroons. Horsburgh has played in the second row in the past and only has potential for improvement with the first grade experience he has gained. One good game on the edge for the Raiders could show the versatility Maroons coach Billy Slater will be looking for in his bench forwards. If Chee Kam cannot restrict ‘Big Red’, he could be in for a very tough night.
