Paris Olympics: Fox produces scintillating run to claim C1 gold

Australian Paris Olympics news

Australia’s Jessica Fox has completed the K1/C1 double at the Paris Olympics after a breathtaking run in the C1 final.

After qualifying second with a time of 106.08, Fox was forced to wait to make her charge for gold down the Vaires-sur-Maine Nautical Stadium rapids.

Germany’s Elena Lilik had to produced the quickest time of the day (103.54) to outdo America’s Evy Leibfarth (109.95) who was the first paddler down the challenging circuit in the final.

However, Fox, who claimed gold in this event at the Tokyo Olympics, was not to be denied in the French capital.

Despite trailing at the first time marker, Fox had hit the lead in quick time approaching the second marker.

From there, nothing could stop the odds-on favourite with leading sports bookmakers as she claimed a third Olympic gold.

Fox recorded a swift time of 99.06 originally, before a two-second penalty upon official review was added to her time, leaving Czechia’s Gabriela Satkova needing to go to a new level after qualifying fastest.

However, an early time penalty all but ensured gold for Fox, with Satkova falling to seventh after posting a time of 114.22.

Fox’s Olympic will roll on with the Women’s Kayak Cross Time Trial on Friday night (AEST), where she partners with sister Noemie Fox.
