Panthers v Cowboys NRL R27 match preview
On Saturday afternoon, the North Queensland Cowboys are travelling down to Penrith to take on the Panthers in their final match of the 2023 NRL regular season.
Last weekend, the Panthers suffered a shock upset to the Parramatta Eels, going down by 14 points in Penrith. After a first half blitz from the Eels, the Panthers were down by 18 points at half time. Three late tries saved the Panthers from total embarrassment, but nonetheless it was a disappointing performance.
This loss dropped the Panthers down to second spot on the ladder, needing a win and a Broncos loss to claim the minor premiership.
The Cowboys took care of the Dolphins last weekend, winning by 24 points in Brisbane. Scoring regularly throughout the match, it was an excellent team effort from the Cowboys, as every member of the backline scored a try.
This win kept the Cowboys finals hopes alive, who will make the top eight with a win and a Canberra Raiders loss to the Cronulla Sharks.
Despite many other top sides resting a large contingent of their starting side, the Panthers are looking to carry their momentum into finals by only making forced changes. Star five-eighth Jarome Luai is out due a shoulder injury sustained last weekend, with Jack Cogger filling his role. But the Panthers are boosted by the return of Dylan Edwards, Sunia Turuva and Scott Sorenson who all return to the starting side.
The Cowboys come into this match unchanged from their win last weekend.
Panthers v Cowboys NRL R27 betting strategy
Prior to last week’s results, the form of these two sides was the complete opposite. The Panthers hadn’t lost since their round 16 encounter against the Cowboys, and the Cowboys had lost their last three.
Looking to make another deep run into September, the Panthers will be looking to carry some momentum with a solid win this weekend. We are backing the Panthers as favourites to win this one at $1.32 with Unibet.
As has been the case throughout the season so far, the star-studded Penrith backline have shared the tries around. Fresh of a new contract extension and back into the side this week, fullback Dylan Edwards will be looking to get across the line once again. After scoring twice against the Warriors in round 25, Edwards is in scoring touch. We like Edwards as an anytime try scorer at $2.30 in this one.
With six of the last seven matches between these sides going under the total points line, we are expecting another low scoring contest. Across their three-match losing streak, the Cowboys were averaging just 13 points a game. Back this match to go under the total match points of 41.5 at $1.90 with top online NRL bookmakers.
Key matchup: Isaah Yeo v Reuben Cotter
Isaah Yeovs Reuben Cotter |
Lock | Position | Lock |
216 | Games | 58 |
29 | Tries | 6 |
One of the top locks in the NRL, the form of Isaah Yeo always has direct correlation to the form of the Panthers. With his second lowest total run metres of the season last weekend, Yeo will be looking to bounce back as the Panthers chase the minor premiership.
Known for leading from the front, Reuben Cotter had an excellent match last weekend, with 156 run metres and 41 tackles. With the Cowboys season on the line, expect another big performance from Cotter.
