Pakistan on top against England despite late fightback

Cricket betting news

England struck late on day one of the first Test against Pakistan, taking three wickets in the final session of a challenging day in Multan on Monday.

After choosing to bat first, the hosts lost Saim Ayub (4) early to Gus Atkinson’s bowling but went on to build a substantial lead, finishing the day at 4/328.

Abdullah Shafique and captain Shan Masood both scored centuries, as Pakistan reached 1/26 at one stage without losing another wicket until the final session.

“I’m feeling happy because performing for your team is a next-level feeling,” Shafique, who scored his first century since July 2023, said.

“The partnership that Shan and I formed was crucial for us. When a senior batter like Shan Masood is at the crease with you, it’s a learning moment – observing how he approaches the game and how he plays.”

However, a resilient fielding effort saw England make a triple breakthrough. Shafique (102) and Masood (151) were both dismissed shortly after reaching their respective milestones, and Babar Azam fell for 30 from 71 balls.

England remain hopeful of capitalizing on a deteriorating pitch as the match progresses.

“You see the guys doing what they did tonight – even the small things in the field – it’s a tremendous effort,” England Assistant Coach Jeetan Patel said.

“The bowlers are doing the hard work, and the spinners are bowling on wickets that aren’t offering much spin.

“You need different types of energy, but you also need support from your teammates. I thought the guys did a hell of a job today.

“Ending the day with six down would have been amazing for us. To have them one down at tea and take three wickets in the last session really sets us up for tomorrow.”

Cricket betting sites are less optimistic than Patel, with bet365 pricing Pakistan at $2.05 to win the Test, with England trailing at $5.50. The odds for a draw have also shortened, now at $2.50 after day one.
