Oprah and Kanye head celebrity presidential market at Sportsbet
DESPITE stating that a presidential campaign “will not be happening”, former talk-show queen Oprah Winfrey has had her odds shortened to $6 at Sportsbet.com.au to be America’s next celebrity president.
Rap star-turned-fashion mogul Kanye West still heads the market at the $5 quote.
Even though the former TV star declared that she will not be running, Sportsbet has opened a number of markets on Oprah, including a $4 option on whether or not she will actually enter the race and a $16 price on an unlikely Democratic nomination.
Ambitious punters can get $34 on Oprah to replace Trump as president in 2020.
The markets come on the back of an interview where the 63-year-old stated Donald Trump’s ascension into the position as the leader of the free world prompted her to rethink her own intentions.
When asked if Trump’s political inexperience made her re-evaluate the potential to run for president, Winfrey said it had.
“I thought, oh gee, I don’t have the experience, I don’t know enough, and now I’m thinking, ‘oh’.” Winfrey said.
Giving Oprah a platform to become the Democratic nominee is not something the political party typically does, but left-wing film maker Michael Moore believes now is the time to take a leaf out of the Republican book.
“Democrats would be better off if they ran Oprah or Tom Hanks … why don’t we run beloved people?” Moore said on CNN.
“The Republicans do this, they run Reagan and the Terminator [Arnold Schwarzenegger] and other people… Why don’t we run somebody that the American people love and are really drawn to, and that are smart and have good politics and all that?”
Sportsbet.com.au representative Will Bryne said the generous odds on Winfrey to become the next president of the United States will shorten significantly if the TV queen decides to enter the fray.
“After watching Trump rise to become President, Oprah must have had her biggest ‘aha moment’ and if she’s serious about entering the race those odds will quickly tumble,” Byrne said.
