Olyroos’ Olympic dream ends in goalless draw against Qatar
Australia’s bid to secure a spot at the 2024 Paris Olympics ended in disappointment on Monday morning (AEST) as the Olyroos struggled to a 0–0 draw against hosts Qatar in their AFC Under-23 Asian Cup group stage game.
Requiring a win to keep their hopes of clinching qualification alive, the Olyroos once again fell short in finding the net, extending their goalless streak to three matches.
The Australians’ inability to convert chances proved costly as they exited the tournament without scoring a goal.
Their journey began with a goalless draw against Jordan, followed by a 1-0 loss to Indonesia.
Questions arose about the omission of promising A-League talent Nestory Irankunda as the Olyroos struggled up front.
Substitute Keegan Jelacic came close to breaking the deadlock in the 75th minute with an effort that was deflected onto the post by Qatar goalkeeper Ali Nader Mahmoud.
Olyroos skipper Jacob Italiano also missed an opportunity before halftime as his shot sailed over the crossbar.
Even if the Olyroos had won, it wouldn’t have been sufficient to guarantee a spot in the quarterfinals.
Indonesia’s impressive 4-1 victory against Jordan helped them secure a place in Group A with six points, earning them a spot in the quarterfinals alongside group leaders Qatar, who finished with seven points.
The Olyroos ended up third in the group with two points, one point ahead of Jordan.
The top three teams from the tournament will qualify for the Olympics, while the team in fourth place will compete against Guinea in a playoff for a chance to go to Paris.
