Bulldogs v Eels NRL R15 match preview

Round 15 of the NRL Premiership wraps up on the King’s Birthday with the Canterbury Bulldogs hosting the Parramatta Eels at Accor Stadium in Sydney. These two sides have already met once in 2023 with the Eels securing a dominant win. Will the Bulldogs be able to bite back?

The Bulldogs have dropped Ryan Sutton and Josh Reynolds in favour of Chris Patolo and Khaled Rajab on the interchange bench. Those moves push Tevita Pangai Junior and Harrison Edwards into the starting side.

With Dylan Brown ruled out under the NRL’s no-fault stand-down policy, Daejarn Asi is expected to slot into the halves. Reagan Campbell-Gillard’s return has been timed perfectly, countering the loss of Wiremu Greig (foot), while Junior Paulo is back from State of Origin to replace Joe Ofahengaue (calf).

The Eels are currently favourites with the best NRL bookmakers, but the loss of Brown to their spine will be a significant blow – particularly when Parramatta’s starting front row has not played in a fortnight. The Bulldogs were so close to beating the Roosters last week in Gosford and will use that confidence to defeat the Eels on Monday at $2.60 odds.

The connection Josh Addo-Carr and Matt Burton are establishing at the Bulldogs can only be likened to that of Cooper Cronk, Cameron Smith, and Billy Slater in their prime. Addo-Carr and Burton appear to know what the other will do before it happens, making the duo almost impossible to defend. Be it a cut-out pass to the wing or a short kick behind the defensive line, there is always a way to get Addo-Carr scoring a try ($2.03).

The other combination that continues to build is between Burton and Jaco Preston. The rookie back-rower has had a phenomenal start to his NRL career, and this weekend he marks up against Bryce Cartwright. The former Titan and Panther has rejuvenated his career in Parramatta but has struggled with defence all season, tackling at an efficiency just over 90%. Cartwright will certainly be a target for the Canterbury attack, and that should see Preston score a try as well ($4.40).

Eels halfback Mitchell Moses has been mentioned as a possible replacement for Nathan Cleary in the New South Wales Blues side, and on Monday he will have no better conditions for his audition. Lining up against rookie five-eighth Karl Oloapu on Canterbury’s defensive left edge, Moses needs to stand up and deliver a big performance if he is to be chosen for Origin II at Suncorp Stadium later this month.
