NFL to hold first-ever game in Australia at MCG in 2026
The NFL has announced that it will stage its first-ever league game in Australia at the MCG in 2026.
The news comes as part of a multi-year agreement with the Victorian government and the state tourism and events bureau, Visit Victoria.
While the NFL has yet to reveal exactly when the first game will take place, the Los Angeles Rams have been locked in as the ‘designated team’.
“Expanding to Melbourne, Australia, a beautiful city with a rich sports history, underlines our ambitions to become a global sport and accelerate international growth,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement.
“Together with the Victorian State Government, Visit Victoria and the Melbourne Cricket Ground, and with the Los Angeles Rams in 2026, we look forward to making history in what is an important market for the NFL and a significant next step in expanding our international footprint.”
Premier Jacinta Allen confirmed the news during a press event at the MCG on Thursday morning, calling the deal a big win for Victorians.
“We’re thrilled the NFL will be touching down in the sporting capital of Australia,” she said.
“Victoria is now the first-ever state in Australia to host a regular season NFL game.
“It’s a win for jobs, a win for businesses and a win for fans who will get to see American football played at the iconic MCG.”
The news comes in the lead-up to Super Bowl LIX, which will take place in New Orleans on Monday (AEDT).
Online bookmakers have the Kansas City Chiefs as a slender favourites at $1.83, with the Philadelphia Eagles paying $2.02.
