IPL 2025: Mumbai Indians thrash CSK by nine wickets
Mumbai Indians thrashed Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede on Sunday, winning by nine wickets to surge into contention for the 2025 IPL title and all but end CSK’s season.
Chennai batted first and did well to post a middling score after a poor start.
Openers Shaik Rasheed (19 from 20) and Rachin Ravindra (5 from 9) both struggled to get the MI bowlers away, continuing CSK’s powerplay struggles this year.
Just 16 runs came from the first three overs before Ravindra fell, bringing Ayush Mhatre (32 from 15).
The 17-year-old brought some much-needed urgency and upped the visitor’s run rate, which was continued by Ravindra Jadeja (53* from 35) and Shivam Dube (50 from 32).
However, a fast finish never materialised for CSK as MS Dhoni (4 from 6) and Jamie Overton (4* from 3) both failed to keep pace, with the side ending on 176/5 from their 20 overs.
Live betting odds favoured Mumbai at the change of innings, and the home side lived up to expectations by controlling the chase emphatically.
Ryan Rickelton (24 from 19) and Rohit Sharma (76* from 45) began at 10 an over, putting on 63 runs for the opening wicket before Rickelton fell in the seventh.
Things went from bad to worse for Chennai when Suryakumar Yadav came to the crease, however, with the big-hitting Indian international plundering 68* runs from just 30 balls.
He and Rohit put on an unbeaten 114-run stand to close out the match, winning by nine wickets with 26 balls to spare.
“The way Rohit and Suryakumar bat, it is a relief from outside,” MI captain Hardik Pandya said after the match.
“You don’t have to worry about Rohit’s form.
“He’s going to come good like this. We knew when he comes good, the opposition will be out.
“SKY (Suryakumar) complemented him.
“The way we are playing the sport, we knew it was going to be high scoring.
“People are stepping up. We have been sticking to basics.
“Percentage cricket is high; we are not trying magical stuff and sticking to simple cricket.”
The big victory takes Mumbai to sixth on the IPL ladder but improves their net run rate to a healthy 0.483.
IPL bookies have the five-time champions as genuine contenders to take out this year’s title as a result, pricing MI at $5.50 alongside Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans.
Just Royal Challengers Bengaluru have shorter odds to win the 2025 IPL, paying $5 at top cricket bookmakers.
