Mongolian Khan on track for Caulfield and Melbourne Cups in 2015
The Murray Baker-trained Mongolian Khan is on track for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups this year and a good effort in Saturday’s Makybe Diva Stakes will have it in prime condition.
The New Zealand and Australian Derby winner is currently paying $17 in the Caulfield Cup betting markets and Baker believes it will need to fresh up run on Saturday.
“I’m very happy with Mongolian Khan,” Baker said.
“It’s a tough race for him first-up. It will be a firm track, probably a good [3], and they will run along a bit but he’ll be hitting the line well.
“I hadn’t seen him for a week before I arrived back over here and he looks great.
“He’s lost a bit more of his winter coat and I’m pretty happy with where he’s at. He’s ready to run a nice mile but it’s still probably going to be a bit short for him.”
New Zealand jockey Opie Bosson will travel to Melbourne for the ride, continuing the partnership that started with a win in the Group 2 Waikato Guineas last January.
Mongolian Khan is currently a $21 chance with bookmakers in the Makybe Diva with currently favourite Boban looking to make it two major wins in a row.
Other Caulfield and Melbourne Cup chances running in the Makyve Diva are Fawkner ($6), Dandino ($101), Magicool ($35) and Rising Romance at $9.
