Mitchell shines as Rabbitohs down Broncos, Johnston makes history
Latrell Mitchell showcased his skills in a standout performance as the Rabbitohs defeated the Broncos 22-12 on Friday night.
Despite a penalty stint in the sin bin during the second half, Mitchell made a significant impact with the ball, putting him in contention for the State of Origin call-up for game 2 in Melbourne.
This victory marked South Sydney’s performance of the season, securing their third consecutive win, with the leading NRL bookmakers paying +140 to the punters.
The icing on the cake was Alex Johnston’s try in the minute, which marked his 191st NRL try, surpassing Billy Slater and trailing only behind Ken Irvine’s legendary record of 212 tries.
The match also brought news for New South Wales coach Brad Fittler as Cameron Murray received clearance from any head injury concerns after an off-the-ball incident that resulted in Jordan Riki’s sin-binning with 24 minutes left.
With stellar performances from Keaon Koloamatangi covering 202 meters on field and contributions from Tom Burgess and Murray, the Rabbitohs effectively contained the Broncos formidable line.
The Broncos recent loss marks their seventh defeat, putting them in a precarious position before their upcoming break.
They are at risk of dropping out of the top eight by the end of Round 15 of the NRL Premiership.
The Rabbitohs will aim to maintain their winning streak as they face off against the Dragons next week during the State of Origin bye round.
