McEvoy reunites with Qewy in Sandown Cup
In-form jockey Kerrin McEvoy will again link with Godolphin’s English trainer Charlie Appleby when Qewy bids to cap a successful spring campaign in Melbourne.
McEvoy has already won the Geelong Cup, Bendigo Cup and Lexus Stakes on Appleby-trained horses this spring and reunites with Qewy in Saturday’s Listed Sandown Cup (3200m).
Qewy won the Geelong Cup with McEvoy aboard last month before the stayer finished fourth in the Melbourne Cup when ridden by Craig Williams.
McEvoy won the Melbourne Cup on the Lloyd Williams-owned, Robert Hickmott-trained Almandin.
Appleby’s assistant James Ferguson said Qewy had come through the Melbourne Cup well and was in fantastic shape for Saturday.
“In every run here he’s exceeded our expectations and to run fourth in the Melbourne Cup was a fantastic thrill for the whole team,” Ferguson said.

“The 3200 metre trip suits, as he showed in the Cup, and he looks capable of controlling this race.
“Kerrin McEvoy rode him very well from the front at Geelong and he’s back on.
“We’re quite confident of him running well again.”
Qewy has topweight of 58.5kg in the field which has been reduced to 10 runners with the scratching of Cinnamon Carter.
McEvoy won the Bendigo Cup on subsequent Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Francis Of Assisi while he rode Oceanographer to victory in the Lexus Stakes.
This is the first year Appleby has brought a team of horses to Melbourne.
Fellow English-based Godolphin trainer Saeed Bin Suroor has Beautiful Romance and Secret Number in Saturday’s Group Two Zipping Classic (2400m).
