Matildas v Nigeria Women’s World Cup preview
The Matildas continue their 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign on Thursday night as they face the dangerous Nigerian team in Brisbane.
In their opening game against the Republic of Ireland, the Matildas looked unconvincing but still were able to grind out a 1-0 win thanks to a Steph Catley penalty. With Sam Kerr missing, the Matildas struggled to create genuine chances throughout the game – something they will need to work on going forward.
Nigeria faced Canada in their first match, performing very well to get a 0-0 draw. Coming in as major underdogs, the Nigerians sat behind the ball, defending as a unit while looking to create chances on the counter. A penalty save from keeper Chiamaka Nnadozie was the critical moment in the match.
As has been the case so far this tournament, many games have been decided by a goal or less, so expect this one to be a low-scoring affair. Once the Matildas went up in their opener, they quickly switched to a back five and brought in an additional defensive midfielder as they looked to sit behind the ball and attack on the break.
While the Matildas come in as major favourites with the best soccer betting sites, Nigeria still possess one of the most dangerous players up front with Barcelona striker Asisat Oshoala. Considered one of the best African players of all time, the Matildas defence will have their hands full as they try to limit her influence.
Matildas v Nigeria betting strategy
Expect the Nigerians to play a strong defensive game, allowing the Matildas to hold possession while they look to score on the break. They play a physical style, and with a strong keeper, they make it difficult to generate chances. We like the under 2.5 total match goals at $1.75 with Palmerbet.
While the Aussies were only able to score through a penalty in their opening match, striker Caitlin Foord certainly looked their most dangerous option in attack. The Arsenal forward took the most shots for any player and looked confident running at defenders. In a match where Australia are expected to dominate possession, Foord as an anytime goalscorer at $2.55 looks a good play.
These two teams previously played each other in the 2015 Women’s World Cup, where the Matildas won 2-0. A win guarantees a top-two finish and progression into the knockout stages, and we like the Matildas to win this one at $1.40 with Ladbrokes.
