Matildas v Denmark Women’s World Cup preview
The Matildas continue their Women’s World Cup campaign on Monday night as they face Denmark in the round of 16 at Stadium Australia.
Needing a win in their last match of the group stage, the Matildas put on their best performance of the tournament so far, beating the seventh ranked Canada 4-0 in a dominant display in Melbourne. A Hayley Raso first half double saw the Matildas take a 2-0 lead into half time, before goals from Mary Fowler and Steph Catley rounded out the win.
This result meant that Australia topped Group B with six points from their three matches.
Denmark came into their last group match needing a win or draw to progress through into the knockout stages. Facing Haiti, they started strong with a 21st minute penalty giving them the lead. There were some tense moments defending their goal in the second half before a goal in the 100th minute sealed the match.
Finishing with wins over China and Haiti, and a loss to England, Denmark finished second in their group with six points.
A challenging matchup for the Matildas, Denmark is ranked 13th in the world. Throughout their qualification for this Women’s World Cup, they showed their defensive quality, scoring 40 goals whilst conceding just two as they went undefeated. In their three matches so far, this defensive quality has continued, conceding just one goal, to England who is one of the favourites for this tournament.
Another positive during the Matildas 4-0 win, was that Sam Kerr was not required, giving her an extra week to recover from her lingering calf injury. One of the best strikers in the world, the Chelsea striker will transform the Matildas attack, which will be much needed against the quality Danish defence.
The Matildas aren’t the only side with attacking quality though, as the Danish captain Pernille Harder has an incredible record of her own. Playing for Bayern Munich during the season, Harder is considered one of the best players in the world, having twice won the UEFA Women’s Player of the Year award.
Matildas v Denmark betting strategy
These two sides last played each other in 2022, with the Matildas securing a 3-1 away win in Denmark. In that match a Caitlin Foord double lead the way for the Aussies as she got in behind the Danish defence. A staple of her performances so far this tournament, Foord has troubled defenders throughout this tournament, as she commands the ball down the left wing. With two assists so far this tournament, she has looked Australia’s most threatening player going forward. We like Foord to as an anytime goal scorer in this one at $3.10 with top Soccer bookmakers.
With the Danish conceding only one goal and scoring only three so far this Women’s World Cup, expect this match to be very conservative to start. The Australian defence also looked much more assured in their match against Canada, with the pairing of Alanna Kennedy and Clare Hunt working well together. With the Matildas substituting on Clare Polkinghorne and switching to a five at the back formation in both of their wins so far, look for the Matildas to play a more defensive style if they get ahead early. We are expecting a low scoring contest in this one with under 2.5 total match goals.
After their impressive performance in their last group game, the Matildas come into this match as heavy favourites. In front of a sold-out Stadium Australia, the Matildas will be relishing the home ground advantage. With the return of Sam Kerr to the line-up, expect more creativity in the Matildas attack as she shows her quality. We like the Matildas to keep their Women’s World Cup campaign alive as they win this match at $1.94 with PlayUp.
