Matildas v Canada Women’s World Cup preview
In their final match of the group stage, the Matildas take on Canada at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium with both sides looking to progress through to the knockout stage.
In one of the upsets of the tournament so far, the Matildas were stunned against Nigeria, going down 3-2 in Brisbane. Opening the scoring in the 45th minute, the Matildas couldn’t even hold their lead to half time, as Nigeria equalised late in the first half stoppage time. Two goals in seven minutes saw the Nigerian team quickly open up a two-goal gap, with the Matildas scoring a late consolation goal.
Canada faced off against the Republic of Ireland in their previous match, securing a 2-1 comeback win in Perth. Coming off a clean sheet in their opening game, it didn’t take long for the Canadian defence to be breached as the Irish scored directly from a corner in the fourth minute. However, two goals either side of half time secured a vital three points in a very competitive group.
For the Matildas to reach the knockout stage, a win guarantees their place, whereas a draw will force them to rely on Nigeria losing and Australia having a higher goal differential or total goals scored.
In their toughest challenge yet, the Matildas face off against a strong Canadian side ranked eighth in the world. With the Matildas defence looking shaky in their loss to Nigeria, they face challenge of the Canadian attack lead by the greatest international goal scorer of all time, Christine Sinclair and OL Reign striker Jordan Huitema.
The Matildas injury woes have continued as they wait upon the availability of strike pairing Sam Kerr and Mary Fowler.
Matildas v Canada betting strategy
The only previous meeting between these two sides was in 2016 where Canada had a 2-0 win. However, with the Aussies in a critical situation, expect a big performance as their survival in the tournament depends on it. We are backing in the Matildas to keep their tournament alive, winning this one as favourites at $2.30.
With the Aussies showing a leaky defence last game, combined with their need for a result in this match, expect a high-quality attacking match. After the tournament started with limited scoring across the groups, the games have started to open up in the second games with sides scoring more freely. We expect this match to go over the 2.5 total match goals at $2.05 with the best soccer betting sites.
Looking Australia’s most dangerous proposition going forward in the loss to Nigeria, Emily van Egmond was a constant threat to the Nigerian defence. Scoring a goal, whilst also having six shots and creating three chances, Van Egmond was a part of almost every attacking play for the Matildas. Playing in an attacking midfield role, she regularly made late runs into the box finding herself in space to take a shot on goal. We like Van Egmond to hit the scoreboard again in this one showing great value at $7 with top Women’s World Cup Bookmakers.
