Liverpool maintain perfect start with 2-0 victory over Brentford

Liverpool defeats Brentford

Liverpool continued their flawless start to the 2024–25 English Premier League season by securing a 2–0 win against Brentford at Anfield on Sunday.

Luis Diaz netted the opening goal for the Reds in the 13th minute, capping off a counterattack.

Mohamed Salah sealed the victory with a goal in the 70th minute.

This triumph marked Liverpool’s second consecutive league victory of the soccer season following their 2-0 victory against Ipswich Town on the opening weekend.

It also represented their home win under newly appointed manager Arne Slot.

Diaz’s goal signified his home opener goal for Liverpool replicating his achievements against Bournemouth last season and Crystal Palace in the 2022/23 campaign.

Salah’s goal elevated him to third place in the EPL Golden Boot race with two goals in two games.

He trails Chelsea’s Noni Madueke, by one goal and Manchester City’s Erling Haaland by two.

Liverpool’s win ensured they joined Arsenal, Brighton & Hove Albion and Manchester City as teams that have won their two Premier League matches this season.

Nonetheless, Pep Guardiola’s squad leads the table on goal difference.

Following the match, Slot commended his team’s performance.

“Our defensive performance today was really good. The only two small chances, one of them was big, were out of a set-piece,” said the Liverpool boss.

“We controlled the counter attacks, we controlled them in their build-up. Apart from that, we created many good chances in the second half.”

Slot also credited the team’s achievements with upholding the core principles established by former manager Jurgen Klopp.

“If I’m honest, I think most players are quite used to what we want. But then it has a lot to do with us doing not so many things different to what Jurgen did in the past,” he said.

“So there are only slight changes maybe but most of it is the same. So if we lose the ball, how aggressive we are, how hard we run back because they don’t want to concede.”

Liverpool head to Old Trafford next Sunday, where they are -120.48 favourites to beat Manchester United (+294) with the leading bookmakers.
