Liverpool clinch EPL title with 5-1 win over Postecoglou’s Spurs
Liverpool secured the 2024-25 English Premier League title on Monday morning (AEST), beating Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 at Anfield to seal the deal with four games to spare.
The Reds are now 15 points clear of second-placed Arsenal, who left the door wide open after drawing 2-2 with Crystal Palace on Thursday morning, while it could be curtains for Australian coach Ange Postecoglou at Spurs.
It looked as though Tottenham were out to spoil the party when former Liverpool forward Dominic Solanke opened the scoring in the 12th minute, but that was as good as it got for the visitors.
Luis Diaz, Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo all found the back of the net within the following 22 minutes, giving the hosts a commanding lead at the halftime break.
Mohamed Salah netted his 28th EPL strike of the season just after the hour mark, while an own goal from Destiny Udogie in the 69th minute summed up another dirty day in defence for Spurs.
The result tops off an impressive debut campaign for Liverpool manager Arne Slot, who had the unenviable task of succeeding Jurgen Klopp — the man who led the club to its first-ever EPL title.
On the other hand, the state of the league table highlights just how far Tottenham have fallen since these two teams met in the 2019 UEFA Champions League final.
Spurs have lost five of their last six EPL games to slide down to 16th on the ladder, and they are now facing their worst league finish since running 14th in 2004.
That spells trouble for ex-Socceroos boss Postecoglou, whose hyper-attacking style has sorely exposed the London club’s defensive frailties.
With the title and the relegation places now set, the focus turns to which teams will qualify for European football next season.
Online bookmakers have Manchester City at $1.30 to join Liverpool and Arsenal in the Champions League, with Newcastle next best in the market at $1.80.
Nottingham Forest are paying $2 at BetOnline to finish off their dream campaign with UCL qualification, while Chelsea ($2.80) and Aston Villa ($26) are also still in contention.
