Sunday afternoon starts with a storm in Newcastle as Melbourne travel north to take on the Knights in round eight of the 2022 NRL season. Fresh off of one of the single greatest team performances of all time, the Storm will be looking to get their fifth win in a row this season, while the Knights are hoping to break a five-game losing streak at home. Newcastle will have their hands full more so than usual, considering they have lost one of their star centres Dane Gagai through injury.
It’s one-way betting for Melbourne so far as they sit at $1.10 in head-to-head markets. Support has been there for Newcastle, floating between $6.50 and $9 following the resigning of superstar club captain Kalyn Ponga. Not only is it hard to see the Knights winning this game, but it’s hard to see Newcastle recording a point on the scoreboard. The market for Melbourne to win with a -38.5 handicap is set at $7.50 with Ladbrokes, which is a terrific value play.
Try scoring for Melbourne last week came at will on Anzac Day. Xavier Coates scored four tries, Ryan Papenhuyzen scored two, as well as Nick Meaney and Jahrome Hughes. The argument can be made that, as a whole, New Zealand have been a better side than Newcastle this season. Therefore, backing Coates to score three or more tries this Sunday at $9.50 is not the most outlandish play. Simultaneously, as Papenhuyzen hunts for a NSW State of Origin debut, the odds of $3.50 for him to score two or more tries is juicy as well.
In 80 minutes of football against the Eels last weekend, Newcastle only managed to score two points. Against a Melbourne side that’s arguably more ruthless than we’ve ever seen before, points scoring for Newcastle won’t get any easier. Alternative points markets for Newcastle have them scoring six points or less set for $2.80 currently, which is a great play in this match.

Key matchup: Kalyn Ponga vs Ryan Papenhuyzen
Kalyn Ponga is one of the most talented players in the NRL, if not the world. However, issues in Newcastle with injuries and a new roster have been hard to escape as the Knights face their sixth loss in a row. On the other side of the park, Ryan Papenhuyzen will line up as both the form fullback of the NRL, and the only man who’s name is uttered as the one to dethrone James Tedesco from the NSW State of Origin side. As unlikely that occurrence it, the fact Papenhuyzen is suggested to take Tedesco’s spot is a testament to the form he’s displayed for Melbourne so far this season. Ponga will need to have the game of his young career if he is any chance of stopping Papenhuyzen and the Melbourne Storm this Sunday.
Knights vs Storm best bet
Melbourne Storm -38.5
Knights vs Storm same-game multi
