The Newcastle Knights will host the Canberra Raiders on Sunday afternoon in what will be their penultimate home game for the 2022 NRL season.
Newcastle have endured a horror fortnight off the field, while the Raiders are still well and truly in the hunt to play finals football.
Newcastle had a brief moment of relief when they defeated the Tigers, but since travelling to Brisbane and getting another touch-up, they’ve had more off-field controversies to deal with.
Club captain Kalyn Ponga and Kurt Mann were spotted drinking while their team was getting dusted against the Broncos, causing huge conjecture about the skipper’s position at the club.
Adding to that, Bradman Best and Enari Tuala have been stood down for the match after failing to meet team standards, causing more people from outside the club to question just what exactly is going on in the Steel City.
The Knights are a $3.50 outsider as the home team, but their home form in 2022 would suggest that price is far too short.
They have won just two games at home and been on the end of many heavy defeats that have embarrassed the big crowds that still continue to come and support them.
While they lost to Canberra earlier in the year, it happened to be just one of two Newcastle losses this season that have fallen under 13 points.
Even though their home record would suggest a heavy defeat is coming, Canberra aren’t known to be ruthless, so the Knights will get their chances to strike and it could well bring the +10.5 line for the home team into play.
Dominic Young at $2.35 with Neds is the best option for the Knights in the anytime tryscorer stakes.

Canberra’s equation is simple: win and survive for another week. They will need one of the teams above them to collapse, but their 2-6 start to the season means they’ve been playing the mathematical equations since May.
A -31 differential is the big hurdle the Raiders need to overcome, and they should see this game as a chance to do so. Newcastle’s form has been horrific at home, having conceded 30 or more points on seven different occasions. While the Raiders will tell you they are only focused on getting the two points, a big part of them must be looking at the ladder and realising the importance of a big win.
Jack Wighton and Hudson Young are the two best options for anytime tryscorers for the Green Machine. The Knights’ right edge in defence has conceded more than 30 tries in 2022 and the Wighton-Young duo is one of the most potent in the NRL. The two combined can net a price of $9.80, which feels like sensational value.
Canberra at the 13+ margin is as short as $2 with some online bookies, further solidifying the feelings of the market makers who are completely out on the Knights.
Key matchup: David Klemmer vs Jospeh Tapine
The front-row rotations on display for both teams are top shelf and fans should enjoy that battle in the middle of the field. Joseph Tapine, a former Knight, has been the best forward in the competition this year and David Klemmer has been the Knights’ best player by a country mile in 2022. Klemmer will be fresh from a controversial week off, so expect a torrid battle up front between these two.
Knights vs Raiders NRL betting predictions
Canberra should win comfortably and give Knights fans just another painful reminder of how far the club has fallen in 2022. The 13+ margin will hit again, just as it has at almost every home game for Newcastle this season.
