Round 15: Newcastle Knights v Penrith Panthers match preview

Round 15 of the 2024 NRL Premiership Season wraps up on Sunday afternoon as the Panthers head up to McDonald Jones Stadium to face the Knights.

Despite being on the road, Penrith enters this clash as clear favourites at -357.14 with Dabble, while Newcastle offers a value selection at +275. The line is set at 10.5 points.

Last Sunday, the Knights suffered their second consecutive loss as they fell to the Melbourne Storm by eight points at AAMI Park. In a high scoring affair, Adam O’Brien’s side threatened an upset, but conceding five tries in a 20-minute spell cost them the match.

Despite sitting in 13th spot on the ladder, they are just one game outside the top eight. However, top NRL bookmakers aren’t expecting the Knights to challenge, with odds of +450to make the top eight.

Star centre Bradman Best is a key inclusion into the starting lineup this week after recovering from a hamstring injury, while forward Daniel Saifiti has been named to return on the bench.

After regaining their State of Origin stars in round 14, the Panthers secured a 10-point win over the Manly Sea Eagles. Led by a hattrick from winger Brian To’o, Penrith’s attack proved too strong for the Manly defence as they scored three tries in each half.

Sitting in third on the ladder, the Panthers are just two points behind both the Storm and Sharks. As the three-time defending premiers, top rugby league bookmakers have them as favourites to lift the trophy once again at +210.

There are plenty of changes for the Panthers this week, headlined by the return of fullback Dylan Edwards and second-rower Liam Martin. Additionally, Brad Schneider is set to partner Jarome Luai in the halves, while Luke Sommerton has been named at hooker.

Knights v Panthers Round 15 Predictions

In the midst of the Origin period, the Panthers often find themselves vulnerable as many of their best players are unavailable or fatigued. However, with no Origin camp or match this week, they should be back to their dominant best. Facing a Knights side that has conceded 68 points in their last two weeks, back Penrith to secure a comfortable win by 13+ points at +105 with Neds.

Coming off a double against the Sea Eagles, Panthers winger Sunia Turuva is now tied at the top of the NRL try scoring list. With 11 tries in 12 games this season, the Fijian has been an excellent finisher on the right side. As the Knights’ defence has been particularly leaky in recent weeks, back Turuva to get over the line at +100 with PlayUp.

If the Knights are any chance of competing in this game, look out for Knights right sided winger Greg Marzhew. Although he is having a poor try-scoring season, there is a clear weakness on the Panthers’ left edge, which has conceded five tries in the last two weeks. Last season he scored 20 tries, which shows he knows how to get over, so back the 27-year-old to score a try at +135 with Picklebet.
