Round 17 preview: Knights v Eels

The Knights return to Newcastle this Saturday in hopes of snapping a three-game losing streak when they host the Parramatta Eels for round 17 of the NRL Premiership.

Consecutive losses to the Bulldogs, Storm and Panthers have forced the Knights down to 12th on the NRL ladder. A fourth loss could push them into the bottom four.

The Eels are dead last on the table following their round 15 loss to the Roosters. Tied on 12 points with the Tigers and Titans, this match is a must-win for the visitors.

Eels interim coach Trent Barrett has been forced to replace the suspended Kelma Tuilagi, with Shaun Lane partnering Bryce Cartwright in the second row. Maika Sivo returns from a hamstring strain to start on the wing, shifting Sean Russell to the centres and Daejarn Asi back to the reserves.

Matt Doorey and Makahesi Makatoa join the bench alongside debutant Matthew Arthur — son of former Eels coach Brad Arthur. Joey Lussick drops out of the side altogether.

Knights coach Adam O’Brien has also made changes to his side for this must-win clash. Dane Gagai has been named to start, despite being in the Queensland squad for State of Origin game two. Jack Cogger and Jack Hetherington have been dropped, with Will Pryce making his NRL debut at five-eighth and Kai Pearce-Paul returning via the interchange.

The Eels have won each of their last six matches against the Knights, covering the line on each occasion. However, Parramatta have lost seven of their last eight matches, and a change of coach has not turned things around. In front of their home crowd on Saturday afternoon, the Knights should be good enough to win and cover the 1.5-point line at -111.11 with Neds.

Knights centre Bradman Best has battled through injury before finding more consistent form in recent weeks. He has scored two tries in his last three matches, with one of those games being shortened due to injury. At +145 with online bookmakers, Best is a great price to score at any time.
