Jordan Thompson claims maiden ATP Tour singles title in Mexico
Jordan Thompson delivered a big win for Australian tennis as he clinched his first ATP Tour singles title at the Los Cabos Open in Mexico on Sunday (AEDT).
In the final, Thompson defeated Norway’s Casper Ruud — a three-time grand slam finalist who has been ranked as high as no.2 in the world — with a scoreline of 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).
However, Thompson’s quest for glory didn’t end there, as the 29-year-old later teamed up with fellow Australian Max Purcell to compete in the doubles event.
Together, they beat Ruud and American Will Blumberg in the semifinals before emerging victorious in the final against Gonzalo Escobar and Aleksandr Nedovyesov.
All up, Thompson spent more than 12 hours on court throughout the tournament.
One of the standout moments of Thompson’s campaign came in the quarterfinals, where he staged a stunning comeback against emerging American talent Alex Michelson.
Despite facing a daunting deficit and three match points against him, Thompson refused to concede defeat, ultimately prevailing in a thrilling encounter.
In the semifinals, Thompson faced off against former US Open finalist and top seed Alexander Zverev in a gruelling battle that extended into the early hours of the morning.
“I spent so many hours on the court this week,” he said.
“In the quarterfinal I could have been double-bagelled. I could have been losing 6-0, 6-0.
“And now I’m about to lift the trophy, so I think it’s still a miracle.”
Thompson’s twin titles make him the first man in two years to win both the singles and doubles at an ATP Tour event, which Nick Kyrgios achieved at the Washington Open in 2022.
The next major stop on tour is the French Open, where Carlos Alcaraz is a +140 favourite from Novak Djokovic (+210), Jannik Sinner (+350) and Rafael Nadal (+400) with online bookmakers.
