Jockey’s death forces meeting abandonment

Friday’s race meeting set down for Pakenham has been abandoned in a show of respect to the family of the Victorian-based jockey killed in a trackwork accident.

Racing Victoria made the decision to cancel the program after consultation with the Victorian Jockeys’ Association, saying their focus was on the jockey’s family and the welfare of participants.

The female rider died in a training accident at the Cranbourne Training Centre on Friday morning.

Trackwork at the centre was subsequently suspended and Work Safe is investigating the incident.

Victorian racing officials have banded together to offer assistance to the rider’s family and the local racing community.
