Jockey Blake Shinn returns with a win

Jockey Blake Shinn has returned from his Caulfield suspension with a strong midweek win on Crown Him at Canterbury.

The 26-year-old missed the Manikato Stakes and Cox Plate meetings at Moonee Valley after he was outed for careless riding on the Anthony Cummings-trained Moqueen in the Ethereal Stakes on October 15.

Shinn was back riding for the Cummings stable on $5.50 chance Crown Him who who beat the $2.50 favourite Octavian Augustus by 1-1/2 lengths in Wednesday’s Vinery Handicap (1500m).

The Melbourne Cup-winning jockey, whose suspension cost him the ride on English in the Group One Manikato, said the win was a great way to get back into the game.

“It is nice to come back from a short break and kick it off with a win today,” Shinn said.

“He had a nice race today and controlled it well. He has come back nicely.”

Cummings’ son and stable foreman Edward Cummings said he was confident leading into the race.

“He has been working very well and as we said he is probably the class horse in the race,” Cummings said.

Cummings said the three-year-old gelding had proved himself at a mile and would definitely manage 2000 metres based on breeding.

“But for now, he will stick to racing in Sydney over 1600 metres,” he said.

“We look forward to seeing him continue to improve.”
